About Mr. Burklow

I did not come to teaching through the traditional path. I started out with a degree in Mass Communications with a Business minor where I worked in TV, film and audio production. Early on in my education I found myself working in the motorcycle industry to help pay for college. There I realized you could get paid to do something you love. As they say, if you love what you do, you will never work another day in your life.

In my career I've worked in Ohio, Kentucky and California in various roles within the retail dealer network, as a consultant, Motorcycle Industry trade organizations, and public relations with my last four years being with the American Honda Motor Company.

During my twenty plus years in industry, prior to becoming a teacher, I worked as a vehicle safety education Instructor (motorcycle, ATV, off-highway motorcycle and automobile), safety curriculum development, professional development and with organizations like the 4H and other non-profit organizations to develop materials to help adults and children have safe experiences. I currently work with the State of Ohio motorcycle rider education program as a part-time consultant.

I rely on those years when working with students in the classroom regarding business concepts, marketing, communications, use of technology and interpersonal communication skills.

In 1999 I completed a second B.S. in Secondary Business Comprehensive Education and started my career as a teacher at LMHS.

What I do for fun outside of the classroom and why?

I think this is important as I am constantly working to bring outside experiences into our courses as they relate to our constantly changing business environment, technology and social technologies. Hopefully this will provide timely and meaningful connections for students. I hope they will start to see the educators they have contact with everyday as more than "objects" standing in front of them, but as people who are there to help them reach their goals.

With these outside experiences I hope I can help students understand that life is more than a job, a career or an education. I hope students will begin to make choices based on the goals they set for their futures lives and their careers.
