Andrew Chalpowski

When he graduated from Monmouth Regional in 1996, he earned varsity letters in soccer, basketball, and baseball.  In soccer he received recognition as an All Division, All County, All Shore, and All State player. In basketball he was recognized as an All Division player.  His dedication, talent, work ethic, and coachability propelled him to the next level where he played soccer for William Paterson University.  His excellence in his sport earned him a NJAC Honorable Mention.After graduation he joined the Monmouth Regional faculty as a teacher, coach and advisor.  To this day he remains a positive influence for our students and athletes.  As a co-advisor to Heroes & Cool Kids he helps current athletes develop the skills and passion to teach elementary school students the dangers of drug, tobacco and alcohol use and the importance of making good, healthy decisions in life.

 

Asher Griffin 

Asher was a talented 3 sport athlete.  He earned 8 varsity letters in 3 years. He also served as a Captain in all three sports, soccer wrestling and baseball. In soccer he was All division for two years and honorable mention all state senior year. In Baseball he was all B North and selected for the Carpentar’s  Cup senior year  while winning Conference titles in 93 and 94 and County titles in 92 and 93. He was a member of the National Honor Society, a class Officer for the class of 94, student council representative and the Booster Club Award winner as an Outstanding senior athlete. At Princeton University he was a three year starter and a four year letterman in baseball. He helped the tigers to three division championships an Ivy league championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in 1996. Senior year he was Honorable mention all Ivy and Collegiate All state. He graduated  with an AB in Political Science. Afterwards he served as an Assistant coach at Monmouth University before attending Stanford Law school where he graduated in 2002. He has worked in Comercial and Securities Litigation and Products Liability for Baker Botts in Houston Texas and presently handles employment litigation, Business tort and commercial litigation and government entity representation in Austin Texas for Scott,Douglass & McConnico where he presently resides. ……….He wore the number  4……..Asher Griffin!

Jimmy Gurbisz 

     

Jimmy was an outstanding athlete and individual.  He was a Home Room Representative the President of the student Council and a member of the National Honor Society, Mock Trial and Students Against Destructive Decisions. His leadership was recognized as he was elected Captain of the Football team and Co Captain of the Baseball team during his Junior and senior year and he was a three year varsity letter winner for both squads. He still holds the season record for most base on Balls with 23 and remains in the top ten for career walks with 50, and RBI’s 47, as well as single season Doubles 16 and Hit by a Pitch 6 and probably the sweatiest uniform ever after practice and games. He was instrumental in the 1996 Baseball B North Championship where he played 1st base and batted clean up.  All while maintaining  that  4.5 GPA garnering him a selection as the Asbury Park Press Scholar Athlete. He could have gone anywhere but selected the US Military Academy at West Point where he starred in rugby and graduated with a degree in Engineering in 2002. He was a member of the first graduating class following 9/11 and he was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in nFt Stewart Georgia. In November 2005 in Bagdad Captain Jim Gurbisz made the ultimate sacrifice in Bagdad. His name is still synonymous with fun, dedication, responsibility, commitment and effort, competitive spirit and finishing what you start. His Jerseys are on display in the hallway and his #52 is high up on the pressbox where it overlooks the fields where he encouraged others to reach for the lofty goals that he established and the ethics that he stood for.

Justin Griffin 

Justin was a standout  athlete in  soccer,  wrestling and Baseball at Monmouth Regional.  He was a National Merit Scholar and a Garden State Distinguished Scholar as well as President of the National Honor Society.  He had 3 varsity letters in Wrestling, Soccer and Baseball. He was a Captain in both soccer and  baseball. He helped Monmouth win their third consecutive  Monmouth County Championship in 1992 and back to back to back Division Championships in 1992, 1993 and 1994. In soccer he was the leading scorer in 92 and 93, second team all County in 1993 and 1st team All County in 1994, and first team All Division in 92 and 93. He was 2nd team All Shore and Honorable Mention All State. In Baseball he was First team All Division in 1993 and 1994 and 2nd team All County in 1993 and 1st team in 1994 as well as 2nd team All Shore.  He was selected to represent the Shore Conference in the Carpentar”s Cup and the NJ State All Star Game.  He was accepted at Princeton  earning a BA degree from the prestigious Woodrow Wilson School. He lettered in Baseball all four years winning 3 division titles and Ivy league Championship and an NCAA Berth. He was an Honorable Mention Selection in 1998 and was a NJ Collegiate All Star in 1996 and 1998. He played professionally for the Johnstown Johnnies in the Frontier league in 1998 before signing with the Cleveland Indians in 1999. After starting out with the Burlington Indians he moved up to the Mahong Valley Scrappers  in short season. In 2000 he was moved up to A ball with the Columbus RedStixx and finished that year with the Lafeyette Bayou BullFrogs ending his professional baseball career with the Camden River Sharks in 2001. He then applied and was accepted to Stanford Law School where he graduated in 2004. After passing the California Bar exam he was hired by Quinn Emmanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges LLP where he represents Fortune 500 Companies such as Nokia, Direct TV, Seiko Epson and Time Inc representing them in all areas in Litigations such as infringements and class actions.  He presently resides in Los Angeles California ……..He had a career .402 batting Avg and remains in the top ten for doubles, runs scored and stolen bases and he wore number 22…………….Justin Griffin

Scott Simpson

Scott was a talented 3 sport athlete at Monmouth Regional where he played football Basketball and baseball. He was a 3 year letter winner in Basketball and Baseball and a 2 year letter winner in football. In 1990 he was a Captain for all 3 and the Most Valuable player for all three. He was 2 time All County and twice 2nd team All Shore in Baseball,  and a Shore Conference and he was third team all state in 1989 and 1st team All State in 1990. He lead Monmouth Regional to a Monmouth County Championship where he was voted the MVP and a Shore Conference Championship. He was voted A Daily News Tri State All Star and accepted a scholarship to play at Rutgers. There he was a 4 year letter winner and starter helping them to 3 Atlantic 10 Championships reaching the NCAA Tournament in 1991 and 1993. He was 1993 Relief Pitcher of the year and in 1994 was a quarterfinalist for the National Player of the year. Baseball America selected him as pitcher of the week two times. He pitched against teams like Georgia Tech and Miami on ESPN and players such as Jason Varitek, Nomar Garciapaara and Jay Payton to name a few . At Rutgers he is still top 10 in career innings pitched and games appeared.  In 1995 he was an Asst pitching coach for Rutgers before starting a 15 year career with Jersey Mortgage where he is currently an Assistant Vice President. He still resides in Tinton Falls with his wife Kim of 11 years and his daughter Ashley 6 and son Tanner 2 ½ .  He still holds the record for innings pitched with 211 with a career ERA of 1.84 with 193 strike outs and is #2 in wins with 21…He remains in the Top ten in career singles 55, triples 5, runs 51, hits 76, and had a career batting Avg of .396………. , .He wore number 12……… Scott Simpson.

Tony Martinez 

Tippy was one of the most gifted three sport athletes that has attended Monmouth Regional High School. Between 1988 and 1991 he had an incredible 4 varsity letters in soccer, 4 varsity letters in Baseball and two varsity letters in basketball. He was all division in Basketball. In Soccer he was Honorable mention in the state and second team All Shore in 1990. In 1991 he was All State as well as 1st team All Shore. In Baseball he was 3rd team all County in 1989, 2nd team All Shore in 1990 as well as All Division and 2nd team All Shore and in 1991 he was All Division, 1st team All County, 1st team All Shore and 1st team All State. He helped win Monmouth’s 1st Shore Conference Championship in 1989, 1st Monmouth County Championship in 1990 and in 1991 a Division Championship, a second County Championship in a row, a second Umpires Sportsmanship award in a row and our 1st State Sectional Championship. He was invited to pro tryouts at Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium and was heavily recruited but found a comfortable fit at Montclair St University. In 1992 he was the NJAC Rookie of the year, in 1993 he was the Eastern Regional MVP and helped lead Montclair to the College World Series and a National Championship. He was All NJAC in 1994 and 1995 starting in the NJ College All Star Game Culminating with his selection to the All America team. He signed with the St Louis Cardinals and played in their system in 1995 and 1996. After his release he played professionally for the Johnstown Steel in 1997 where his career ended with an injury. After several years as an Asst @ Monmouth Regional he became the Head Baseball Coach at RBC between 2001 and 2007…..He was 2-2 against the Falcons and it was always interesting. Tony now teaches at Freehold Twp HS and resides in……………….with his wife…………..and Children…He still Holds the Career Records At Bats 321, Runs Scored 86, stolen bases 62 and the season record for at bats 100…while remaining in the top 5 for Career hits 137, career era 1.62, innings pitched 160, singles 96, doubles 17,  wins 19, and RBI’s 47…………He wore number 11……..Anthony “Tippy” Martinez

TOBY STARK

After graduating from Monmouth Regional in 1999, Toby attended Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina.  Upon graduation, Toby returned to New Jersey where he was employed as an IS Technician for the County of Monmouth.  Since then he became a System Analyst for Ft. Monmouth and is currently the owner of Stark Associates Health Benefits, LLC in Eatontown.

 Besides finding success in the business world, Toby succeeds in giving unselfishly of himself to the community.  As President of the Eatontown Lions Club he is actively involved with numerous community service events.  Through the Lions Club, Toby works to gather eye glasses from the local area and ship them across the globe to be distributed to the less fortunate, volunteers at the local food co-op where he assists with semi-annual food drives and has helped fund-raise for organizations such as Camp Happiness, the Fischer House, and the Capt. James Gurbisz Foundation.

Toby’s dedication to helping others serves a model for others to follow.  It is a pleasure to introduce Toby Stark as an inductee into the Monmouth Regional Hall of Fame.
