Being a good digital citizen is merely part of being a good citizen. There is no longer a separation of our digital lives and our regular lives. They are one. Our responsibility, as educators, is to help students navigate the complex issues involved in understanding and developing one's digital presence. With the advent of social media and other web tools, there are few lessons that have been created with practical tips for students. We must teach students to master their online narratives. This site is designed with that goal in mind for MISD K-12 students.
All digital citizenship concepts should be taught at point of need continuously throughout the year. In an ideal classroom, digital citizenship is embedded into every lesson that utilizes digital tools and online resources. Longer, more in-depth lessons can be used to introduce a concept and really "drive it home." Otherwise, 5 minute modeling or mini-lessons can be a powerful, ongoing reminder. Thinking aloud as you model interacting online can be an easy and effective way to integrate these concepts. You might want to collaborate with your campus LMS to plan, gather resources, and co-teach.
