The ESL students at Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School have been increasing their English skills as they collaborate to create classroom newspapers. Students chose article topics, conducted research, added photos, and published their articles through Google Docs. Previous article topics included the following: movie reviews, student interviews, holiday traditions, and informative pieces about students’ native countries. The asynchronous format of Google Docs allows students to work in class and at home. This format gives students the opportunity to make comments and help edit each other’s articles. More fluent students are able to offer suggestions to newcomer ESL students with just the push of a button! Similarly, students gain great experience in using the computer to conduct research, translate information, and become skilled at using Google Docs. Before the unit begins, we study various grammatical rules and writing styles. We also practice editing our writing using student created checklists. The newspaper project is an authentic way for students to implement new grammar skills and academic vocabulary. One of the greatest benefits is the level of academic discussion that takes place regarding both the content of the article and various language conventions. Students take such pride in the final product and enjoy sharing the paper with parents and family members. Be sure to check out our various editions below!
