"Learning should be an active process. Too often, students come to school to watch their teachers work." -Will Daggett, President of the International Center for Leadership in Education
The speaking domain of the WIDA standards should focus mostly on rich academic discussion. In my class, students are often teachers. They lead class discussions, work in groups to present skills, and gain much confidence in speaking in front of an audience...all while practicing their English. Our ESL class is a safe place where students feel comfortable taking risks, making mistakes, and acting as a leader.
Many of our ESL lessons are embedded into units of study. During those units, there are numerous mini lessons based on new concepts and student needs as well as AMPLE opportunities for group work and collaboration. During collaborative activities, I have the chance to circulate, talk to the different groups, make suggestions, and note any struggles students are having with the skills. After students become confident in their skill, they teach the class what they have learned. They ask the questions, model the skill, and check for understanding. Although there are so many benefits of student-led instruction, I believe the confidence and leaderships skills gained are perhaps the greatest outcome.
