Capital Science & Engineering Fair

2023

This year three students presented in the Capital Science & Engineering Fair:

2022

Two MCDS seniors, Claire Shepley and Hunter Stephenson, presented at the Capitol Science & Engineering Fair in March 2022, competing against high school students from around Dane County. Both projects were mentored by chemistry teacher, Michelle Kramer.  Congratulations to both Hunter and Claire for their hard work on these projects!

How does a varying amount of H2O2 added to oxidize Co2+ to Co3+ affect the mass and purity of trans-dicholorobis(ethylemediamine) cobalt (III) chloride product made through a synthesis reaction?

Claire's project won first prize in the Chemical and Biological Sciences Division. Clair was also honored with the Society of Women Engineers award.

How does the ability of calcium alginate to encapsulate lactase change at increasing gelation temperatures?

Hunter's project won third prize in the Chemical and Biological Sciences Division and the US Metric Association prize. Additionally, Hunter placed third in the overall competition!
