RBMS NJHS

National Junior Honor Society

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is a student led, nationally recognized organization. Our purpose is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, promote worthy leadership and citizenship, and encourage the development of character in students at Running Brushy Middle School. Contact and administration of NJHS at RBMS will be conducted through Google Classroom. Members need to see Mrs. Jones of Mrs. Casias for Google Classroom log in information.

SELECTION PROCESS:

If you are looking to join NJHS, then be sure to keep your 4 core classes at above a 90% average, and look for an invitation to apply in the Spring! We invite 6th & 7th graders to join during the spring semester of every year. If you are an 8th grader, then you will not be able to join RBMS NJHS, but will have the opportunity to apply for the National Honor Society in high school pending your grades.

  • Applications are given to all students who have an overall average of a 90% or higher in their four core courses through the 4th grading cycle the current academic year.

    • An average of 90% or higher in the four core courses. Grades in any of the four core courses from any grading period that fall below an 80% will not be accepted when determining membership eligibility. Beginning in the spring 2018 membership selection, a 10-point bonus will no longer be added for students enrolled in PACE math. This will be to align with chapters practices across the district.

    • The student must have attended RBMS for the equivalent of at least one full semester (or 3 grading periods) to be offered membership.

  • Students given applications will need to turn them in by the stated deadline. Applications turned in after that time will not be accepted. The application includes four teacher recommendations, a list of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and achievements and a hand-written essay.

  • Applications will be graded on a points system. A student must earn 150 points to be offered membership. A maximum of 160 points can be earned through teacher recommendations, with extra points added on for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Points will be deducted for referrals, D-Hall placements, or ISS Placements. A LEO placement will automatically disqualify a student from membership.

  • If a student is selected, then a payment of $15 dollars will be due ($5 for annual dues with a one-time $10 induction fee) with a formal induction that will be held in May. Students will be notified in writing whether or not they have been selected for membership.

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regular attendance to scheduled meetings. If a student is unable to attend a meeting that must submit a valid reason to have it excused. Members are allowed one unexcused absence per year.

  • Four hours of community service each grading period, for a total of 24 for the academic year. The last day to turn in hours is May 15th.

    • Up to 12 hours can be completed over the summer and can be tracked on the summer service hour log.

  • Maintaining a 90% or above in core academic classes

  • Turning in required paperwork in a timely fashion.
