Reach for the Stars

I hope your child has been reading and recording minutes read for our Reach for the Stars fundraiser. Your child does not have to collect donations to participate in the minutes read portion of the fundraiser. If our school wide goals are met, Mrs. Hammond has to KISS a FROG!!! We have been falling short of our minutes read goal for the past few years. Please encourage your child/ren to read and then parents please record the minutes your child/ren spent reading. Let’s make this the year to watch Mrs. Hammond kiss the frog. All Reach for the Stars reading logs and donations are due the Monday we return from fall break.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Your Parent Teacher Conference confirmation slip will be sent home with your child after fall break. Conference day is Wednesday, October 26th from 3:00 - 6:30. Since I could not schedule all conferences on the 26th, I am also meeting with a few parents at various times the week of October 24th for a conference. Report cards will be sent to parents on October 21st.

Trunk or Treating and Chili Supper

Also on the evening of October 26th is the PTSO Trunk or Treat and free-will chili supper. The chili supper starts at 6:00 pm and Trunk or Treat starts at 7:00 pm. If you would like to have a trunk for this event email the PTSO at lanesvilleptso@gmail.com. Families wishing to donate items for the chili supper go to http://signup.com/go/DawN41. Students are invited to dress up and go trunk or treating in the side parking lot starting at 7:00.

What We are Learning 2nd Quarter

Science:

We are finishing our unit on plants and animals. One of our last activities for this unit is to take a walk around the school grounds with our tablets and take pictures of plants. We will compare our fall plant pictures with the plant pictures we took in August. We will also discuss animals and animal habitats that were seen on our e-trip Critter Garden and at O’Bannon Woods Nature Center.

Social Studies:

We are learning facts about the American flag and the pledge. We will be adding a flag description page to our social studies notebook. Then we will learn about the upcoming elections in November.

Reading Language Arts:

We will review short vowel sounds and long vowels will be introduced. Students will learn about silent e (cut becomes cute when silent e is added). We will focus more on story comprehension. Students will learn about plot, characters, setting, main idea, key details, and sequence of events. We will start having weekly assessments over comprehension skills.

In grammar, we will review the components of a sentence. Students are expected to begin sentences with a capital letter and end the sentence with a punctuation mark. We will continue to learn about nouns and action verbs will be introduced. Students will continue to write daily and learn more about the 6-traits of writing.

Math:

We will continue to work on addition facts and introduce corresponding subtraction facts within 20. Solve real-world problems (story problems) involving addition and subtraction within 20. Students will count (by ones, fives and tens), write, and identify numbers to 120 or higher. Students will compare number values by using the symbols >,=, and <. Students will review telling time on the hour. We will participate in a Mystery Number activity in a few weeks with a school from Clyde, TX. We have to figure out what the mystery number is by asking questions. Ex. Is your number even? Is it less than 50? Is it a multiply of 10? Etc.
