Parent Support Meetings
Just a reminder that our last Apogee Parent Informational Meeting for the school year is tonight, April 22, 2015, from 7 - 8:30 p.m. in the LMS library. The topic for this quarter is STEM, STEAM and Current Trends in Education. We will have a guest speaker, Dr. Kevin McColgan, Ladue School District's STEM coordinator, who will begin our talk with some background information on STEM and STEM education in Ladue. Hope you can make it!
Opportunities for Gifted Students and Their Parents
Camps Specifically for Gifted Students:
College for Kids: Meramec
The College for Kids (CFK) program is offered by the Continuing Education office of St. Louis Community College-Meramec for gifted and talented elementary and middle school youth who have completed kindergarten through eighth grade. Drury University
Summerscape: Pre-College Program for Gifted Students, Grades 6-8
The Joseph Baldwin Academy for Eminent Young Scholars.
A three-week residential program located on the campus of Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri for grades 7-9 that offers a selection of liberal arts and sciences courses taught by Truman Faculty. http://jba.truman.edu/
The Maryville Summer Science and Robotics Program for High Ability Students This is an opportunity for students who are interested in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) fields. The program will run from July 13-24, 2015 and offers high end programming with professors, engineers, computer programmers, and gifted certified teachers. Designed for children and teens ages 4-15 who are either already identified as gifted or who perform well above others their age in science, technology, engineering, art and math including exceptional use of engineering toys such as LEGO or other building sets. http://www.maryville.edu/robot
Project MEGSSS' "Elements of Mathematics" introductory summer program is designed for students scoring at the top levels in math and reading. Elements provides a rigorous, challenging introduction to the world of mathematics. Students completing this program may continue in our Elements After School programs, or return in succeeding summers for advanced courses designed specifically to broaden mathematics exposure and develop solid critical thinking skills. http://www.megsss.org/index.php/program-information/summer-programs

MathJam Summer Programming
#MathJam is a summer challenge experience designed to nurture mathematics interest in younger students, introduce middle school students to advanced topics not covered in a school setting, and provide hands-on, project-based, math experiences that allow students to make connections to science, art, and writing. Summer Creative Writing Camp:STL POETS & WRITERS, INK

Have a child who loves to write? Janie Ibur, an award-winning local poet and creative writing teacher is offering creative writing classes this summer and next school year to interested students. This course is an excellent way to gain self-confidence about writing, find like-minded friends and have fun. As a poet, Janie writes and teaches formal poetry, whith amazing results. Janie is looking for serious writers who like to laugh because a sense of humor is important to the process; she is looking for kids who write like their hand is on fire.
Janie Ibur is a creative writing teacher with nearly 35 years of experience teaching writing to students of every age. Her work has been recognized with six prestigious awards: the Anti-Defamation League, twice by the Missouri Scholars Academy, the Warrior Poet Award, the Loretto Award for social justice and a Visionary Award for Outstanding Arts Educator. Several times a year Janie teaches Professional Development sessions for teaching artists and classroom teachers about integrating art and writing into all subjects in the curriculum. Last fall she was keynote speaker for the Missouri Writers Guild annual convention.
She will be teaching students entering grades 7-12 on 6 Sunday's this summer:
June 21 & 28 - 12pm - 4pm
July 12, 19, 26 - 12pm - 4pm
August 2 - 12pm - 4pm
She will also be teaching classes once a month during the school year. Classes will be announced soon.
