Family Research Project
Assignment: Prepare a six (6) paragraph presentation on your family and the story of their immigration to America. Use family records, interviews with other family members, i.e. grandparents, great-grandparents, great uncles and aunts, cousins, etc… newspaper articles, diaries, photographs to tell your family history. This is a GREAT OPPORTUNITY to contact old family members and make connections with new family. If you can, try and trace the history to c. mid 1800s or early 1900s, our current period of study.
This assignment is worth 100 points. You must submit a well written 6 paragraph essay and present a 4-5 minute presentation to the class about your findings. You must have at least 1 visual aide.
Address some of the following in your presentation:
1. Describe their journey. Did they come by bus, truck, boat, plane, etc?
2. Describe why they came to America and how their lives were changed.
3. How were they treated when they arrived here? What language did they speak? Could they read and write in English? Did they teach the next generation their native language? Why or Why not?
4. Did they come through Ellis Island in New York from Europe? Or did they come from Asia to Ft. Mason, California? Or across the northern or southern borders of the United States? Where did they finally settle?
5. Did they separate from other family members and spread throughout the United States? Where are your second and third cousins, aunts, and uncles located?
Assignment: Research your family history. If you can trace the history to c. mid 1800’s, our current period of study.
