To: Customers using eApps hosted mail service inside of their VPS
Subject: Replacement of Postini Spam filter service
This is an important notice related to a change in the eApps Spam service. Please read this message carefully because these changes will impact you unless you are not using mail services in your VPS.
Postini, a Google Spam and Virus filtering service, is being discontinued. Google has informed us that the Postini service will be discontinued for eApps effective February 23, 2013. Postini has been the default Spam and Virus filtering service for all mail services in our Virtual Private Servers (VPS). If you use the mail service in your VPS, and have not previously configured your mail to use an external third party Spam filtering service, your Postini Spam filter service will be replaced by the SpamExperts Spam filter service.
General Information:
We have been using the SpamExperts service for two years. SpamExperts provides excellent Spam and Virus filtering protection. Most of our Virtual Machine in the Cloud customers use SpamExperts. We also use it internally for our eApps.com mail. We are confident that SpamExperts will provide effective Spam and Virus filtering for our customers.
Details on the Change to SpamExperts:
There are two scenarios - 1) customers that use eApps for their Domain Name Service (DNS) and 2) customers that do not use eApps for their DNS.
Scenario 1) - Using eApps DNS: This is the most common scenario because the majority of our customers use eApps for their DNS. We will be moving your Spam filtering account and configuring your DNS records to use SpamExperts on Monday February 18th. No action will be required by you. Your mail service will not be interrupted, it will just be processed by a different Spam service. In addition, the Technical contact on your account will receive a new admin login to the Spam administration interface. This login allows you to administer the Spam service for all of the domains in your account. Please see User Guide http://support.eapps.com/vps/spamx_admin for more information about the domain administration functions and User Guide http://support.eapps.com/vps/spamx_user for end user administration.
Scenario 2) - Not Using eApps DNS: If you use external DNS both the account administrator and the technical administrator of your account will be sent instructions in a separate email on how to make the transition to SpamExperts within the next two days.
Billing Changes:
There is also a billing change related to the new Spam filter service due to the difference in how our vendor charges us for the use of the service. With Postini, customers were given an allowance of mailboxes depending on the size of the hosting plan. Customers that exceeded their allowance were billed $.30 per mailbox per month. SpamExperts bills by domain, not mailbox. After the transition, each hosting plan will be given an allowance of five (5) domains in their VPS. Each additional domain that uses Spam filtering will be billed at $1.00 per domain per month. This billing change will result in lower fees for Spam filter overages in most situations.
Note:
We have tested many different Spam filtering services and found that each service has pros and cons. Our experience with SpamExperts over the past two years has been positive. The biggest change we have seen is that some initial SpamExperts users had to unsubscribe from newsletters and promotional emails from real companies that were being blocked by Postini. The counter to that is Postini often blocks some legitimate emails. In any case, one’s mail usage profile and personal preferences are also key factors in assessing the effectiveness of a Spam service. We recognize that some individuals might want to use a different Spam filter. For these reasons an alternative Spam filtering service will be available. Information about this alternative solution will be provided upon request.
Sincerely,
eApps Hosting
