Hello,
My name is Cassie. I created this website for my Gold Award Project. The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn and it requires a girl to address a major issue that they see in their community. They have to lead a project that will impact their community and they have to spend at least 80 hours on their project.
The issue I chose to address was that Senior Citizens have troubles using phones and tablets. I first noticed this issue with my grandparents. They struggled to use their tablet, then later their phone in ways that I took for granted. I wanted to help them and help as many other people as I could, so I embarked on my Gold Award journey.
As society progressively becomes built on being able to use an electronic device, it becomes harder for seniors that don’t know how to use technology to actively take part in today’s world. As a result, seniors struggle to take pictures of their grandchildren, order presents online, call their families when they are lonely, find their way home when they are lost, or work different parts of their brain through apps to keep them functioning further into their old age. It is a huge disadvantage for those who can’t use the basic functions of a phone as they are separated from a massive part of the world. It is worrying that a large part of seniors, who make up 13% of America’s population, struggle with technology. These staggering numbers led me to increase my awareness of this issue. It gave me the idea to create a class geared toward seniors. That way, the seniors in our community have the same opportunities as everyone else. The materials presented on this website are from the class. Hopefully, with this website, I will help more people learn enough to help them to use their technology efficiently.
