Directions to wash your Tie Dye T-Shirt:
1. SHIRTS SHOULD BE KEPT AT ROOM TEMPERATURE OR WARMER FOR 24 HOURS IN THE PLASTIC BAG.
2. THE NEXT DAY THE RUBBER BANDS CAN BE REMOVED FROM THE SHIRTS AND THE SHIRTS CAN BE REMOVED FROM THE BAG.
3. RUN THE CLOTHES WASHER FULL OF HOT WATER (ON LOW SETTING OR GENTLE WASH) WITH 2 TEASPOONS OF MILD DISHWASHING SOAP (JOY, DAWN, IVORY, OR WHATEVER YOU USE TO RINSE DISHES). ADD THE SHIRTS AND WASH. UP TO 15 SHIRTS COULD BE WASHED AT A TIME, THOUGH THERE ARE MANY COLORS.
4. RUN THROUGH HOT DRYER.
5. AFTER THIS FIRST WASHING THEY CAN BE WASHED WITH NORMAL CLOTHES DETERGENT (LIKE TIDE). YOUR TIE DYE SHOULD BE WASHED WITH YOUR DARKS.
You will be Tie Dying your T-Shirts on one of these days only.
Your $5 you gave your Chemistry Teacher will cover all of your supplies and one size appropriate T-shirt that you told your teacher.
Although you may have a Tie Dye T-shirt in your wardrobe, many of us have never actually made one.
Below are some pointers:
1. Wear grubby clothes and shoes that you don't mind might get some color on them that won't come out.
2. You can bring another item to Tie Dye as long as it is 100% cotton and it is not a giant sheet.
3. Prior to your assigned day, choose the style and colors that you would like to make.

The dyes are fiber-reactive, which means a chemical reaction takes place between the dye and the fabric molecules. The dye bonds with the cotton and becomes part of the fabric. That is why the dyes are so permanent and vibrant even after several washings.
