The Honors courses and College Board AP program at Ingleside High School provides students with the opportunity to prepare for and excel in college-level studies for students who are task-oriented, proficient readers, exceptional writers, independent researchers, and critical thinkers. AP courses are taught using college-level materials that will prepare students for the demands and rigors of college classes and for the College Board Advanced Placement Examinations which are designed to assist students in obtaining college credit after successfully taking these exams.
Prior to enrolling, students & parents/guardians should consider all aspects that will affect student success in the Honors and AP Program:
- A substantial amount of work outside of class is required.
- Although after-school activities such as band, athletics, choir, etc. or by an employer, a student must still be prepared for class.
- The number of courses taken per semester may increase the challenge to succeed.
- The student's maturity and self-discipline may affect classroom success.
- Grades may be lower than those in a previous course in the same subject since coursework is more rigorous.
- Required summer reading, assignments and/or projects are assigned and are due at the beginning of the following school year.
- The exit procedures must be followed.
- Students should also look closely at their individual abilities and skills prior to entering the Honors and AP Program where they will work to succeed.
- The course description of a Honors or AP course means that the focus will be on skills and concepts recommended for success in college and beyond. These courses are more demanding than the traditional courses, and students are expected to devote more time and energy to this type of class.
- Grades - Students must maintain an average of 70 or above to remain in an Honors or AP course. All students, however, are encouraged to maintain a higher average.
- Students are expected to pay for and take the AP exams at the conclusion of their AP courses.
- If a student is re-assigned to a regular class at any time during the semester, grades previously earned will be transferred to the regular class, without weighted value.
Summer Assignments - Students who will be entering the Honors or AP Program in the fall are responsible for summer reading and/or other written assignments for some classes. The necessary reading material, assignments, etc. will be made available to students by the last day of school. It is each student's responsibility to check with the classroom teacher to make sure that he or she have received all required materials. The summer reading assignments/projects must be completed by the first day of school and submitted by the appropriate due date. If the assignments are not completed and handed in by the due date, the student will receive a grade of zero (0), will be placed on probation for the remainder of the first six weeks, and may be removed from the class at the end of the first six weeks of school.
Honor Code and Behavior Code - Honors and AP Courses will be conducted under an honor code. All students will be expected to do their own work. Copying, plagiarism, or any form of cheating will subject the student to immediate removal from the course in which it occurs. Any behavior that interferes with the classroom's learning environment will subject the student to immediate removal from the course.
Advanced Placement Exams - The College Board schedules Advanced Placement Examinations for AP courses for a two week period usually in May. These are national exams that are being taken in high schools across the country on the same days. Universities may grant college credit to students whose scores on AP exams are three, four or five. Each individual college sets its own required minimum score. Exam Scores are mailed to the students.
Exit Policy - At any time during the semester, the classroom teacher may recommend reassignment of the student to a regular class if the student is not demonstrating success in the course or has excessive absences. The student's parent or guardian will be contacted prior to reassignment.
