2022 IFIMUP Talks #9 by Gabriela Forman (ULisboa)

2nd EPS Structural Dynamics Online Workshop

The Structural and Dynamical Properties of Solids Section of the Condensed Matter Division of the EPS has launched the online workshop series: The EPS Structural Dynamics Afternoon Online Workshop. This event is co-organized by IFIMUP researcher Joaquim Agostinho Moreira and aims at gathering scientific contributions dealing with Dynamical and Structural Properties in Condensed Matter topics.

The workshops take place once a semester online and regroup 2 invited contributions from established researchers in the field and contributions from doctoral students, selected by our scientific committee.

The organizing committee has the pleasure to invite you to the 2nd EPS Structural Dynamics Afternoon Online Workshop on December 7th starting at 14:00 PM (CEST). Here, DFT and Ab Initio Calculations in Condensed Matter Physics will be the focus.

IFIMUP researcher at FIC.A

Arlete Apolinário, a Junior Researcher from IFIMUP, was at FIC.A last Saturday talking about Nanotechnology in the production of Green Hydrogen. FIC.A (Festival Internacional de Ciência) is an International Science Festival that celebrates scientific culture in Portugal and around the world.

She talked about the importance of nanotechnology in the production of green hydrogen and in the response to climate change, a discussion that becomes particularly relevant in the current context of energy crisis, triggered by the invasion of Ukraine.

Funding under CaixaResearch by "la Caixa" Foundation

IFIMUP (Dr. João Ventura) is part of the consortium in the Project NeuroSpark funded on 1 M€ over 3 years by Fundación "la Caixa" under the 2022 CaixaResearch Call for Proposals in Health Research in the area of Neuroscience. The host is i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Ciência (Dr. Paulo Aguiar) in partnership with IFIMUP and Instituto Cajal, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - CSIC, Spain (Dr. Liset Menendez de la Prida). This initiative funded 33 new biomedicine and health research projects in Spain and Portugal.

The project titled "Innovative neuromodulation strategies to treat brain diseases" (NeuroSpark) aims to develop and validate the first neuromodulation strategy based on electrical nanocomponents capable of emulating neuronal synapses, providing real-time adaptive control of neuronal activity.

Magnetism in Portugal: young researchers

IFIMUP received the Magnetism in Portugal 2022 – Young Researchers meeting from September 12th to 13th, 2022 at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto (FCUP).

Magnetism in Portugal 2022 was devoted to young researchers, Master, PhD students and young postdoctoral working in or interested in different topics of Magnetism. The main goal was to bring together a multi-disciplinary group of young scientists and students from different Portuguese institutions to present and exchange break-through ideas in the field of magnetism.

The conference provided 25 oral presentations, 18 poster presentations, 3 invited speakers from academy and industry, and a networking activity called “Imaginary Project Call”. The event hosted the main research institutions working in the field in Portugal offering wide range of networking opportunities. Topics covered include (but are not limited to): Geomagnetism; Energy applications and 2D materials; Multifunctional materials and devices; Molecular and Bio Magnetism.

Verão com Ciência 2022

IFIMUP has 4 Research Initiation Grants under the FCT initiative Summer with Science 2022. Students may apply to the 4 different projects until August 8.

Plan 1: growth and study of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures that exhibit low-dimensional (2D) behavior, strong electron correlation and spin-orbital coupling - Dr Pedro Rocha-Rodrigues and Prof João Pedro Esteves de Araújo.

Plan 2: production and characterization of naturally grown layered Perovskites, providing new efficient materials for sustainable energy conversion - Dr Neenu Lekshmi Prasannan and Dr Armandina Lopes.

Plan 3 & 4: control of a built-in temporal pulse modeler to modify the spectral phase of ultra-short pulses from an ultra-fast laser, also built from scratch - Dr Tiago Magalhães and Prof Helder Crespo.

FCT National Funding

FCT published the results of the 3 annual National Funding Calls for R&D Projects, PhD Grants and Individual Scientific Employment. IFIMUP ensured funding in all of them, having 3 Projects approved in the areas of Materials Engineering (2/18 PeX of 50k€ each) and Physics (1/6 ICDT of 250 k€), 1 PhD grant in Mechanical Engineering and 5 Junior Researchers (3/10 in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology and 2/8 in Physical Sciences.)

Dr. Leandro Martins defended today his PhD Thesis on “Fabrication and characterization of spin torque vortex oscillators”. Our warmest congratulations to him and to his supervisors, Dr. Ricardo Ferreira (INL), Prof. João Ventura (IFIMUP) and Prof. Paulo Freitas (INESC-MN). EnReflect closing session

The EnReflect project would like to invite you to participate in the Closing Session that will take place on the 7th of July 2022, at 9:30 am, in the Professor Joaquim Sarmento Room, in the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.

This session will present and discuss the results of the research project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-28766 “EnReflect – Envelope systems with high solar reflectance by inclusion of nanoparticles”, funded by FEDER funds through COMPETE2020 - Programa Operacional Competitividade e Internacionalização (POCI) and by national funds (PIDDAC) through FCT/MCTES.

IFIMUP work on the National News

IFIMUP's work in collaboration with i3S was recently mentioned on the national news. RTP mentions the developed technology able to autonomously actuate when there is abnormal neuronal activity. These advances are promising for future brain implants for the control of Epilepsy and Parkinson's disease. In interview to SAPO24, the researchers further explain that the next step is to “keep the way biological neurons fire inside the brain in one of the neuromorphic networks”, a research that will be pursue within the scope of a new project 'MNemonicS' funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). This work was recently published at ACS Appl. Electron. Mater.

IFIMUP students awarded at IJUP

IFIMUP young students were present in this year edition of IJUP (Youth Research at the University of Porto) from 6 to 8 of May, being a strong presence in the Physics and Engineering sessions. Furthermore, two students were awarded with best Oral Presentation in Math, Physics & Astronomy (Inês Ornelas) and in Engineering (Inês Batista), and one with best Poster Presentation in Physics (Andreia Silva). IFIMUP on the news

IFIMUP's researcher Arlete Apolinário was invited by the Laboratório de Materiais Nanoestruturados (LMNano), do Centro de Tecnologias Estratégicas do Nordeste (CETENE) in Brazil to give an online talk for the Institute. This was an iniciative to promote knowledge exchange, as described in the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (news in Portuguese). Arlete talked about the production of nanotubular titanium dioxide matrices for renewable energy applications .

IFIMUP researchers presented their work at AEM2022, a premier conference series (18th series) on alternative energy materials which was held from 6-8 April 2022 both virtually and at Imperial College London. Furthermore IFIMUP is also part of the Scientific (João Pedro Araújo, João Ventura) and Organising (Estelina da Silva) Committees.

Next Friday, April 1 at 14h online via Zoom Colibri, Dénise Narciso and Ana Bensabat Paulino will give the 2nd session of the 2022 IFIMUP Talks series. They are two FCUP students selected for the financed 2021 FCT Summer Project "Verão Com Ciência - IFIMUP". Their talk will be on "Study of the Alloys with the Giant Magnetocaloric Effect: Gd5Si2Ge2 and Mn0.9Cu0.1CoGe".

2022 IFIMUP Talks #1 by PhD Student Cláudia Fernandes

Workshop on "Advanced materials and methodologies in circular construction"

IFIMUP researchers, in collaboration with researchers from Institute of Structures and Construction (CONSTRUCT; FEUP) and Centro de Química-Vila Real (CQVR; UTAD), organized the virtual Workshop on "Advanced materials and methodologies in circular construction", supported by Project Circular2B funded by EEA Grants.

This one-day thematic workshop covered aspects of emerging materials and methodologies in the construction sector, including nanomaterials and nanocomposites, adaptive materials, machine learning, reflective and radiative coatings, energy efficiency or 3D printing, among others. The Keynote Speakers were internationally recognized experts in these fields, allowing researchers and PhD students to contact with their valuable experiences.

Pedagogical Innovation of the U.Porto awards a project with IFIMUP's researchers


The Expansion and Compression of Materials project, a transversal pedagogical platform, authored by researchers of IFIMUP, João P. Araújo, André Pereira and João Horta, and Carla Rosa, professor from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP), was one of the seven winners of the annual competition for Pedagogical Innovation Projects, organized by the U.Porto.

The project proposes the introduction of a new laboratory work “Expansion and compression of materials” in the UC “Laboratories of Physics III” of the 3rd year of the Physics and Physics Engineering degrees.

3rd Condensed Matter Physics National Conference

IFIMUP researchers and students partifipated in the 3rd Condensed Matter Physics National Conference. This conference was organized by the Condensed Matter Physics Division of the Portuguese Physical Society and took place in Lisbon from February 28 to March 2. IFIMUP work was represented in 7 oral (1 invited) and 7 poster presentations, and some members were also part of the Organizing Committee and the Scientific Commission.

IFIMUP researchers organize the workshop Neutron and Muons: from Science to Society

On Januray 19, researchers Joaquim Agostinho Moreira and Rui Vilarinho, in collaboration with Maria Paula Marques (U. Coimbra) and Pedro Vaz (IST), organized the workshop Neutron and Muons: from Science to Society, with resident researchers and beamline directors from the CERN/n-TOF, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, Paul Scherrer Institute, and Institute Laue Langevin. These workshops have the aim to help Portuguese researchers in getting to know better the opportunities of these large international infrastructures for the submission of future works in neutron diffraction and muon spectroscopy.
