Multilayer films of transition metal nitrides, such as CrN/MoN, TiN/MoN, ZrN/CrN exhibit unique properties provided by superposition of individual layers, features of interlayer interfaces and dimensions of structural elements. Such materials demonstrate improved toughness and resistance to the failure. Thus, they may serve as high wear performance protective coatings under extreme conditions, and contribute to the recycling of materials.
