The Girls in STEM Club was started in the Fall of 2020 with the aim of bridging the gender gap in the STEM pathways by allowing girls at ECVHS to have accessibility to the different fields that STEM offers at an early age, including computer science, engineering, physics, math, chemistry and biology. We will be having workshops, competitions and working with women in science to further our future paths into STEM careers.
Five scientists from various fields joined 35 students from El Cajon Valley High and other invited high schools in a Zoom where they shared their research and their career paths. Students asked questions and had a chance to interact directly with professionals in various STEM fields.
The Girls in STEM Club and the Medical Pathway hosted a drive-through Flu Vaccine Clinic in partnership with San Diego County Health and Human Services "Champions for Health" Agency. We were able to help with flu protection for our community. We handed out goodie bags with hand-sanitizer and masks and created and held signs to help direct traffic.
Mary Garcia, an ICU nurse with 34 years of experience, Zoomed with us and described the path towards becoming a nurse and what it is like to help saves lives in the Intensive Care Unit of UCSD Health Hospital. Students asked questions about schooling, and how it feels to be an experienced nurse.
Four San Diego electrical engineers /computer programmers Zoomed with the Girls in STEM Club to share experiences in attaining the career and moving through a variety of positions and companies. The two female engineers shared experiences in what it is like to be so unique in their field.
