Welcome to Biology! I'm from San Diego and graduated from San Diego High School. I earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and a teaching credential from UC Santa Barbara. I was then a marine science instructor in the Education Department at Sea World for seven years. We taught preschool through university-level courses both in the park and at schools. It was a lot of fun teaching kids about everything from snails to whales! There I first witnessed how scientific research is conducted.
I then earned a master’s degree in molecular biology from San Diego State University. I worked in a lab there studying the protein interactions that control the human heart; specifically, how congestive heart failure progresses. From there I went into the biotechnology field. I spent six years as an associate research scientist at Alexion Antibody Technologies working on therapeutics against various cancers. However, I knew I had to return to my first love – teaching!
I am very proud to have been a teacher at El Cajon Valley High school since 2008 where we strive to use the most effective teaching strategies to ensure our students progress both in academics and in personal skills. I love the character of our campus where diversity is celebrated. In addition to teaching at ECVHS, I have also taught biology courses at Cuyamaca Community College.
The world of biology is changing very quickly with all of the discoveries being made through advanced technologies. Biology is fascinating to me and exploring it with students is very rewarding. It is a privilege to spend time with the students of ECVHS.
Sincerely,
Lynette Smith
