Radio - Students should write a script with news dated between Thursday, November 9th and Friday, November 10th. Radio will put program together Friday, November 10th with Ms. Williams. Take your time, work together and time out loud at least 5 times. Ms. Williams will have a packet or you can pick your own articles.
Extemp and Impromptu - Students will draw their topics at the tournament. Extemp prep will occur before rounds 1 & 2, and Impromptu will be the standard two minute prep.
Awards: Individual awards will be provided for the top six in each event. There will be ties! No team awards. Go up if your name is called. Full team stands up if anyone from our team is called.
Time - There will be no official penalty for time (except in radio - 4:50 - 5:05 or you DQ that round). Judges may consider it as part of the criteria for ranking in all events.
Snacks - Ellie and Alex L are providing snacks (No peanuts) May want to bring your lunch or there are some things to buy at the tournament. BRING YOUR OWN WATER BOTTLE. No sharing of water bottles. Let's keep healthy!
Practice - Remember, that even if you aren't competing at a tournament, you still get coached and attend meetings! Get in the room as many times as possible to work on your pieces. You should be off script. Be sure to warm up talking to a wall before being coached! Don't forget intros! Friday, you may want to run your pieces with your coach. Get everything together for the morning and get some sleep Friday night! Prose and Poetry - Don’t forget your black books. Radio - Don’t forget your stopwatch and program.
Award Etiquette - We always sit together. Please stand when one of our team members is announced. You do not need to go crazy but also enjoy it. No cell phones, clap (1 clap rule), be courteous even if you are not called to go up.
Professional Attire - How you give a first impression and how you feel in your outfit are very important. Believe me, when I say it makes a difference. Girls: No skirts that are too short, must wear hose (bring extra pair) Shoes should look professional. (A little heel - avoid flats), no big jewelry, no jazzy patterns, hair out of your face (bobby pins), NO DARK OR WORN OFF NAIL POLISH!, make sure it looks like a full, professional outfit! Men: Full suit if you have them or sports jacket and dress pants and tie, NO JEANS! . NO gym shoes, wear dark socks, belt. Tie should be professional. Hair is neat and clean shaven. Make sure everything fits and is clean and pressed BEFORE the tournament. Do not change anything with your outfit if you are ever in final rounds and award ceremonies.
Phones: Make sure you have put Do Not Disturb on your phone and disable texting so you have no noise during rounds/finals. Better yet, leave your phone in your bookbag in the cafeteria - There will be coaches at the table. Make sure you are on REMIND so I can reach you.
Warming Up your piece: You should always get in the habit of warming up your piece before getting coached and before each round at a tournament. Just pick a wall at the ARC to talk to. Talk out loud and as if it was for real. You will see everybody doing this at the tournament
Before Rounds: We will get a team table in the cafeteria. Don’t go anywhere! I will register the team and come back to give you your code. In this tournament, our code will be a band name plus a number after it. Fill out your critique sheets carefully (with a pen (bring a black or blue) legible (you will have 3 critique sheets for 3 rounds). You should put your name, event, title and author (Poetry - just put your program title. Radio - Put your call letters. IMP/EXTEMP - Leave blank) Be careful to remember your critique sheets when you go to your rounds and keep them neat! After you are done, go find your room, warm up your piece (s) out front to a wall and make sure you are happy with your appearance (hair out of face). Get to your round a little early. Come back to the cafeteria between rounds if you have time. (Anya, Gabe, Eric, Sean, Mia and Gianna are there to help you)
Walking up/Sitting down - Your first impression and last will be the most important. Make it a strong one. Do not say "Thank You" or “That’s it” or “I’m done” at the end of your speech. Minimum talking in your room. Do not chit chat. ALWAYS be supportive to everyone in your round.
Double-Entered - If you are in two events...Decide with your coach what event you want to perform first. Go to the room of your second event for each round and write on the board that you are double entered - that way they know to wait for you. You need to tell the judge in the first room that you are double-entered before the round begins. (When you hand them the critique sheet) After you perform, say to the judge “Excuse me, I’m double entered, may I please be excused” Continue onto your second event. Don’t rush. They will wait for you. Warm up a bit and switch your head over to that other event. Wait for applause before you enter the room. Impromptu/Extemp. - wait in the hallway until they call you in. I will have a Varsity helper with each person who is new to being double entered in the morning.
Judges: Judges should never give you oral critiques. You will not know your rankings ir times until after the whole tournament is over. Do not ask! They may look young. Acknowledge them at the beginning (small head nod to make sure they are ready). Leave a moment at the end before you sit down. (two counts)
Critique Sheets - are there to help you for the next tournament. You will be able to get the comments through speechwire or your coach will have paper critique sheets at the Monday meeting (November 13). See what comments are consistent to work on for the next tournament. I will go over them before our next meeting and put what I think you need to be working on for the next tournament.
