Objective: Graph and identify points on the coordinate plane.
The coordinate plane was developed by the French mathematician and philosopher Rene Descartes in 1637. It consists of two perpendicular number lines: a horizontal line called the x-axis and a vertical line called the y-axis. The point at which the two axes meet is called the origin.
A location, or point, on the coordinate plane is given by listing an ordered pair of numbers, written (x, y). The first number indicates the point's distance from the origin along the x-axis, and the second number indicates the point's distance from the origin along the y-axis. Watch the video below.
