M.S. Position in Shellfish Restoration and Ecology

Post date: Mar 8, 2016 7:21:04 PM

Hello all. The CRABE lab currently invites applicants for a Master's Degree in Biology, starting in the Fall semester, 2016. Our lab group is interested in shellfish restoration and ecology (see the Research page). The prospective student will work on a research collaboration with colleagues from Stony Brook University and Long Island University, both in New York. This multi-investigator effort seeks to examine the role a non-target, filter-feeding shellfish species, Crepidula fornicata, might play in restoring degraded ecosystems. The summer field seasons for this project will occur in Long Island, New York, while the course work and lab experiments will take place at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA (http://cosm.georgiasouthern.edu/biology/). We will apply experimental approaches to understanding the role this mollusc might play in the ecosystem. The graduate student will participate in a rigorous monitoring program during the summer sampling months.

The ideal candidate will have interest in restoration and ecology, have strong quantitative and writing skills, experience with field research methods, and an ability to work both in a team and independently. In addition, the ideal candidate will be able to start this summer. Competitive students that meet all requirements for the graduate program will be supported by a teaching assistantship during the semester and a research stipend during the summer.

Interested students should contact Dr. John Carroll (jcarroll@georgiasouthern.edu) prior to submitting an application. Please attach a curriculum vitae that includes GRE scores and GPA, and a writing sample.

For more information, visit the Schenk lab website (https://sites.google.com/a/georgiasouthern.edu/carroll-lab/home) and the Department of Biology's website (http://cosm.georgiasouthern.edu/biology). More information about the Biology graduate program can be found at the departmental web page (http://cosm.georgiasouthern.edu/biology/graduate-program-2/).

Additional questions about the GSU graduate program can be directed to Dr. Checo Colon-Gaud (jccolongaud@georgiasouthern.edu). The application deadline is April 1st, 2016 for full consideration.
