Current graduate student, Mattie Whitesell, has been awarded one of two Institute for Coastal Plain Science summer research assistantships. Mattie will be working on Ossabaw Island this summer monitoring the hatching success rates of sea turtle nests, while measuring a number of physical and geological factors, in hopes of developing a predictive model for hatch success, which state agencies, such as the GA Department of Natural Resources can improve management strategies. She will be working very closely with the sea turtle conservation program, as well as faculty in the Department of Biology and Department of Geology and Geography at Southern. This award is only given to 2 graduate students within the College of Science and Math every year, and includes a $4000 stipend to support student research. Congrats Mattie!
