System Requirements
This software will only run on 64 bit versions of Microsoft Windows 7 and up.
Some of the functions used by the software support parallelism, therefore a multiprocessor and/or multicore computer is recommended (this statement is not as dated as it sounds, as virtual machines offer the choice of core number). .
Since time-gated image data sets tend to be large, and many analysis steps involve processing all time-gate images within a given time point, it is preferable to have as much RAM as possible available. 8 GB or more are recommended.
Download the Installer(s)
4 pieces of software need to be present on your computer for AlliGator to run properly:
- AlliGator
- LabVIEW Run-time Engine (RTE)
- Vision Development Module RTE
- HDF5 library
Follow the instructions below to make sure you install the correct versions of each. Do not hesitate to post a support request on the Support Google Group to ask for help or advice.
AlliGator Installer
Scroll down to the bottom of this page to pick up the installer version of your choice. It is recommended to install the latest version. To find the latest version, use the Sort feature of the table to organize the list in descending order of version number or release date.
LabVIEW and Vision Development Module RTE
The installer only installs the software and its dependent files, but won't result in a functional executable unless you have the LabVIEW 64 bit Run-Time Engine (RTE) installed on your machine (*) as well as the Vision Development Module (VDM) Run-time Engine. Starting with version 0.16, HDF5 support is needed and the necessary installer link can be found at the end of this section.
The LabVIEW RTE installer is available for free from National Instruments (link below, (*)). Although the VDM RTE is free to download (link below, (*)), it requires a license to be used (asked for during installation) after a trial period. If you have a license for a different version of VDM, it will probably work. If not, a license will need to be purchased from National Instruments. As of 2/2019, an academic license for deployment costs $110 ($440 for non-academic users). Be aware that the ordering and delivery process takes a few days... We apologize for this inconvenience. Any help to convince National Instruments that this practice is antiquated and counterproductive is appreciated. In particular, feel free to express your opinion by contacting NI at https://www.ni.com/en-us/contact-us.html.
(*) The required version of the RTEs depends on the AlliGator software version:
LabVIEW 2019 SP1 (or later) 64 bit RTE (and VDM) for version 0.21 and above:
LabVIEW 2018 SP1 (or later) 64 bit RTE (and VDM) for version 0.15 to 0.20.4:
LabVIEW 2017 SP1 64 bit RTE (and VDM) for version 0.9.11 to 0.15:
RTE: https://www.ni.com/en-us/support/downloads/software-products/download.labview.html#310821
LabVIEW 2016 64 bit RTE (and VDM) for versions prior to 0.9.11:
Several versions of the RTE can be installed concurrently on the same machine, but since they are hefty, it is possible to uninstall the unused versions to save space.
Uninstalling AlliGator does not uninstall the corresponding RTE version, therefore it is only necessary to install the required RTE once.
Note that if you have the correct LabVIEW development environment installed on your machine, there is no need to install the RTE again, as it will already be available.
(**) As of LabVIEW 2018, an AlliGator version developed with LabVIEW XXXX should be executable with any more recent LabVIEW version (YYYY > XXXX). In other words, installing the most recent 64 bit LabVIEW RTE and VDM RTE (the VDM RTE covers both 32 & 64 bit versions) should cover all AlliGator versions 0.15 and newer.
HDF5 Library
In order to be able to save and load HDF5 files introduced in version 0.16, the HDF5 library version 1.8.18 needs to be installed.
The free installer can be found here: https://support.hdfgroup.org/ftp/HDF5/releases/hdf5-1.8/hdf5-1.8.18/bin/windows/hdf5-1.8.18-win64-vs2013-shared.zip
Installation Instructions:
1. Once the LabVIEW RTE, VDM RTE and HDF5 library are installed (this only needs to be done once, unless the version changed - see above), download the zip file (by clicking on the downward-pointing arrow to the right) in a location you can easily access (e.g. on the Desktop).
2. Unzip the file. This requires right-clicking on the zip file and selecting "Extract All..." to expand the archive into a new, temporary folder:
3. Run "setup.exe".
4. Follow the instructions on the installation screen (the default values are fine).
The installer will create a "Phasor Analysis" folder under the "Program Files" directory on your computer (unless it already exists, in which case it will not be modified) and install the corresponding version of AlliGator in it, with the name "AlliGator x.y.z.exe", where "x.y.z" is the installed version. In other words, it will not uninstall or overwrite previously installed versions.
