Spelling in second grade follows the Orton-Gillingham approach to instruction.
It focuses on using phonetic skills and patterns to spell words. Students are asked to apply the phonics skills to spell a variety of words that follow the pattern. We will practice reading, writing, and spelling words with the weekly phonics pattern.
Spelling quizzes are given every Friday (or Thurs. if there is no school on Fri.).
Students are not given a specific list of words to learn for the test.
Every test consists of 15 words following the phonics pattern, 4 red words, 2 sentences.
Each test includes a grade for Spelling, Grammar, and Handwriting.
