Our math program is called Big Ideas.
Big Ideas is a new program being implemented this school year.
Math Homework
There is a page at the end of every lesson called "Practice". It will go home in your child's folder. Sometimes this is optional and sometimes it is required. Required homework is always discussed in class and your child will write the assignment in their student planner. If you would like your child to have more practice, feel free to use the optional homework page at home.
There is a QR code on the top, right of the homework page. If needed, this code can be scanned to pull up additional information about the concepts in the homework assignment.
There will be math homework about one time per week.
Math Tests
I will send home a test reminder and study sheet for homework before the final test of each unit.
Problem Solving
In second grade math we solve a lot of word/story problems.
We use a strategy called CUBES to help us focus and pay attention to important details to solve the problem.
Below you will see a copy of the CUBES poster we have in our classroom.
Here are some great web sites that have math games.
Course Description for Second Grade Mathematics:
In second grade mathematics, students use place value concepts to 1,000 and apply this understanding to add and subtract numbers within 1,000 using both mental strategies and algorithms. Students will explore multiplication and division operations using manipulatives to develop a conceptual understanding of the processes. Second grade mathematics involves mastering two and three dimensional shapes including the identification of attributes. Students will partition shapes into halves, quarters, and thirds and apply that knowledge to represent fractions in written form. Length, capacity, and temperature will be measured by selecting appropriate tools using standard units. Students will tell time to the nearest five minute increment and count both coin and paper currency. Students will collect, represent, and interpret data using line plots, bar graphs, and picture graphs. Problem solving strategies and techniques will be applied to all areas of mathematics taught in second grade. This includes the eight standards for mathematical practice which are: 1. Make sense of the information in the problem. 2. Read a problem and carefully work hard until solved. 3. Use math-talk to explain thinking and discuss the work of others. 4. Look for and identify patterns. 5. Show work. 6. Use the correct tools for the job. 7. Show and represent work neatly, completely, and accurately. 8. Check to make sure the answer is reasonable.
