So it seems like my best next step would be to solder the experimenter kit together and then write a program to capture snapshots of the cat coming in.

Somwehere between the upper end of the video experimenter shield's max resolution and like 5x5 pixels will be a resolution that would give me an adequate picture which could be comparted to some samples gathered from the above.

I have to figure out how he's doing the storing/retrieving in order to come up with a plan on how to do that.
