I just came across a really simple LED chaser circuit. Most of the chaser circuits I've seen just have more parts than this. I'm looking at potentially doing something like this with my kids. I think I have one 555 left but I'll have to get the 4017.
There are a few different designs there including making your own oscilator instead of the 555 which is also cool so I figured I'd post it.
When I did the Cylon pumpkin I ended up doing it with digital logic instead of analog logic and then converting. Not because of any reason other than that was the only parts I had. I don't want to do it that way again so I think I'll break down and order a couple analog decade counters (the 4017 IC.) The single 4017 you see in that design was replaced with 4 other ICs in my rework. Coupled with the fact that I'm using a bunch of really old parts meant the 9V got sucked dry really fast.
It came out pretty cool though. ^_^
