First Serial Out Research

So I'm cruizing around the internet looking for information on how to do serial out from the android so I can control the door. I came across a couple of articles. The first is an instructable which says it requires root on the phone to do it. I don't think that is an issue in this case but the second was very interesting.

The folks over at Robots Anywhere put together an app which uses audio output of the device as a modem. They have the code and a schematic for an input circtuit on the other side available here.
