Happy October!
We have enjoyed getting to know not only the students in our classroom, but also many different second graders through our Intervention and Enrichment time each day. This is a part of our day where the students move to different areas around the school and receive instruction that is individualized to their needs.
Shared Reading:
Weekly skills overviews are sent home each week. These are also found here: Weekly Reading Overview Unit 2 Week1 - Unit 2 Week 5
Guided reading groups are going well. As teachers work with small groups, the rest of the class works on corresponding literacy activities. These may consist of extensions to previous stories that we have read in the anthologies, or may be other work relating to various skills such as spelling or other writing activities.
Spelling:
List words will come home each Friday for the following week. Weekly spelling tests will be each Friday.
Continue to practice second grade priority words. The list can be found on our second grade website.
Unit Studies:
We’ve completed our Insect Unit! The kids really enjoyed sharing and learning about different insects. We will have a speaker visit and bring some insects into share with us.
We've begun our first Social Studies unit. The students love having their own book to write in. The first unit focuses on what being a responsible citizen means. We will also introduce rights that all citizens have and identify government leaders and their roles. Some vocabulary terms used in this chapter include respect, responsible, government, rights, law, court, Congress, symbol, and independence.
Math:
We have learned many different strategies for addition and subtraction. We worked on repeated addition and creating arrays. Now our unit will focus on place value to 100. We will study models for tens and ones, reading and writing numbers, using symbols to compare numbers, counting to 100, 10 more and 10 less, and even and odd numbers. Our next topics include mental addition and adding 2-digit numbers with and without regrouping.
Writing:
We will continue to use the writing process in our writer’s workshop. Students will begin writing personal narrative pieces. We will incorporate the six traits of writing (ideas, organization, conventions, voice, word choice, sentence fluency) while writing about personal experiences.
Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education!
