What a great start to second grade it’s been! Students have become accustomed to the rules and procedures in their classrooms and are successfully showing their transition into a new year.
Spelling: Spelling lists will be sent home in Friday Folders. Here is the second grade website if you want to see them online https://sites.google.com/a/epsne.org/srsecond/
Unit Studies: Throughout the year we will alternate between Social Studies and Science. We will be studying insects, specifically mealworms and milkweed bugs. This is always a unit the children enjoy. We will test over insects in the middle of September and your child will get the opportunity to bring their mealworm home at the end of the unit – hopefully in their new form!
Math: This math curriculum uses objects, drawings, conceptual language, animations and real world situations to help them. We are currently investigating addition and subtraction strategies to help solve problems. Please work with your child on math facts! Knowing these facts quickly will help your child tremendously throughout the unit.
Writing: Throughout September your child will be exploring Writer’s Workshop in their classroom. They will work on personal narratives and insect research reports. Students will learn the Six Traits of writing through mini lessons. We will also work on specific skills like choosing and sticking to a topic. We are always working on conventions like correct spelling, complete sentences and accurate punctuation.
Reading: See the attached pages Here for the reading skills, strategies, grammar, word work and unit themes for the unit. The first week of September, will be completing Unit 1 Week 3. The week of 9/9 will be Unit 1 Week 4. The week of 9/16 will be Unit 1 Week 5. The week of the 23rd will be a review week before we take our Unit 1 test.
Thank you for a great start to the year! Please contact us with any questions you may have.
We look forward to seeing everyone at conferences on September 24th or September 25th.
