Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Lengths of segments of PVC were decided for prototype
Used Matlab and Excel to characterize center of mass, center of buoyancy, and center of pressure locations as functions of PVC segment length
Determined theoretical trim weights necessary based on this analysis
Completed fabrication of our first prototype
First testing will occur on Tuesday 1/31
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Canyon View approved our trimming experiment and reservations have been made for Tuesday 1/31 10:30-11:30
Finalized the testing procedure for Tuesday
Purchased remaining materials needed to complete fabrication of prototype
Completed fabrication of prototype for testing on Tuesday
Calculated theoretical value of masses needed to trim, will confirm with trimming experiment Tuesday
Completed impact on society rough draft for report
Created CAD model of our prototype
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Design the bail (HARRY)
Design sensor mounting (Kendra)
Test trim position on prototype (All)
Test sensors to see affect of dynamic pressure (AARON/TUNG)
Contact people with experience with SIO experiments to discuss what it would take to run experiments there (AARON)
Design line termination method (ALAN)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
No meeting with sponsor during week 3 due to sponsor traveling.
Previous comments:
When designing, keep in mind how the item will be installed and interacted with by divers (1/20/17 in person)
Decided upon 500lb test braided spectra because it is much thicker and easier to handle
Looked at tilt analysis, worst case tilt is 1.75 degrees with thicker line and prototype float design
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Since students do not have access to Ansys Fluent, students might consider using Comsol, which is a more powerful and complex but less user-friendly multi-physics program
Students should let Dr. T know as soon as possible if SIO will need to be used so he can make the appropriate contacts.
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Consider contacting industry professionals for opinions in addition to your own research. (1/24, in-class presentation feedback)
A little confusing on the operation. (1/24, in-class presentation feedback)
Maybe split up the slides a little more evenly (1/24, in-class presentation feedback)
Risks and Areas of Concern
The purchasing pushed a bit behind schedule, so we were unable to test Friday. However, testing has been rescheduled for Tuesday.
