Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Sponsor approves of current float design (1/13/2017)
Design of the bail is still in progress
Specific sensor location and attachment is pending analysis with assistance from UCSD faculty
Materials will be purchased within the next week
Contact has been made with static test location (Canyonview) but specific details need to be confirmed; specific testing procedure is still being discussed
Dynamic test bed location (SIO Water Channel and/or Transdec Pool) and procedure are still being worked out
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Each member completed their individual research component analysis (All; 1/13/17)
Contacted Canyonview Pool regarding a static testing bed (Alan)
Met with the sponsor to discuss and finalize overall float design (All)
A Matlab code was created to input dimensions and output buoyancy and effect on line tilt to quickly determine calculations for the float (Aaron)
We have reached out to UCSD faculty in fluid mechanics for assistance with analysis on the sensor’s effect on the overall dynamics of the system, specifically drag (Kendra; 1/16/17)
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Meet with Professor David Saintillan for assistance with analysis on the sensor’s effect on the overall dynamics of the system, specifically drag (Kendra; 1/19/17)
Meet with Ian Richardson to discuss purchasing materials (All; 1/17/2017)
Finalize static testing procedure (All; 1/19/2017)
Confirm reservation with Canyonview Pool for static testing (Alan; 1/18/2017)
Have initial float fully fabricated and ready for testing (All; 1/22/2017)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Regarding our use of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography Water Channel, funding from SPAWAR is available for potentially two rounds of testing, however the logistics of purchasing would have to be figured out (1/13/2017, in person)
The team should research the Transdec Pool to determine a dynamic testing procedure (use 3 different weights to create 3 different float speeds) (1/13/2017, in person)
Check with SIO for water channel schedule and logistics (1/13/2017, in person)
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Make names and deadlines clearer and be more specific on Progress Reports (All)
Use more graphs (over charts) to help visualize (All)
Talk with Tom / Ian about purchasing materials
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Not applicable
Risks and Areas of Concern
Attach sensors such that dynamic pressure effects are negligible
Have a useable test-bed that is within our budget
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Still need to find a dynamic test bed to properly test the float (Scripps is $500 per day plus $80 per hour)
Need to know more about dynamics of actual system (mass of cart/buoy, frontal area of cart/buoy)
Schedule
Design of testbed 50% complete (need to get official word from Canyon View that we have permission)
Materials will be purchased this week (1/17/2017)
Float fabrication should be completed next week (1/22/2017)
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
$0 spent, $2500 remaining
Sponsor already purchased sensors
Progress on Report and Web Page
Will be updated with Design Proposal Presentation Tuesday (1/17/2017)
