Overview of Project Context
The project fits perfectly into COHU’s industry objectives. COHU develops and supplies MEMS test
modules. At the present time the test modules can only test one MEMS at a time. Although the MEMS
themselves only cost a fraction of a dollar, testing each MEM costs dollars. This is due to the fact that
the MEMS test equipment can only test one at a time and is very time consuming. The goal of our
project is to develop a test module that can test four MEMS at a time. This would drastically reduce the
cost of the MEMS and thus be a very desirable piece of test equipment.
Project Objectives
Define Hardware
Design
o Reference mic
Must operate 20-20kHz
Must be applicable to chamber testing(not open air mic)
o Piezo Stack
Up to 130dbA
o Dual Drive Amplifier
o Piezo Membrane
o Sockets
Find method to attach MEMS
o Test Chamber
o Design/Redesign MEMS test bed
WOW Design Solution
Easy to manufacture, can test at least 4 MEMS devices at one time and less than 1% error in signal being
generated.
Risk Reduction Objectives
Investigate if piezo can accomplish required design specifications (THD)
Investigate if piezo stack can dissipate heat generated at higher frequencies
Work with previous group to help construct design solution
Intermediate Milestones
Define and order components before beginning of spring quarter.
