As part of the year long celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Women’s Studies Program, the Gender Issues Group and the Women's Studies Program invite you to attend the 17th Annual Julia Reinstein Symposium with the theme of “Elmira College: Champion of Women’s Rights and Education since 1855.”
The symposium begins on Monday, February 7 at 11:30 am in Kolker Lecture Hall with a keynote address by Elmira College alumna Susan Douglas '72, author of the recent book Enlightened Feminism, as well as the best-selling books The Mommy Myth and Where the Girls Are.
On Tuesday, February 8 at 1:45, students Raven See ‘11, Maegan Morin ‘11 and Donna-Lee Hughes ‘11, will present their original research papers in Harris Hall 4. On Tuesday evening, the Gender Issues Group will screen a documentary film on the porn industry titled The Price of Pleasure. Lauren Hunt ‘11 will lead the after-screening discussion. Viewer advisory: parts may be disturbing to some audiences.
On Wednesday, February 9th, Barbara Snedecor, the Director of the Center for Mark Twain Studies, will present a lecture in the Tifft Lounge at 7pm. Her talk is titled: '“Goodness is the only thing worth while:" Selections from the Letters of Olivia Langdon Clemens, Class of 1864.'
On Thursday, February 10th, at 5pm in the Tripp Lecture Hall, Librarian and Archivist Mark Woodhouse will present a talk titled “Elmira College Women: Higher Education and Work (1880-1920).”
On Thursday and Friday evening at 7pm, students and faculty will perform The Vagina Monologues, directed by Raven See'11. This event will be held in Tompkins Hall. Please mark your calendars to attend this symposium that celebrates Elmira College’s long history of advocating women’s rights and advancing women’s opportunities through education. These events are free and open to the public.
