Welcome to the ACT math site for Ed-Co HS
When presented with the equation 5x+10=60, the way to solve for x is to separate the x from the rest of the numbers. You want to get x all by itself on one side of the equation.
To solve this example 5x+10=60, first subtract 10 from both sides of the equation. You can do anything to an equation as long as you do the same thing to both sides.
So now you have 5x=50. Then you divide both sides by 5. Now you have x=10.
To check your answer you can plug your x value back into the original equation.
5*10+10=60. So, x=10 is the correct answer.
Also when solving for x (for the most part) the order of operations goes backwards.
The MAIN GOAL is to get x by itself so you have one number equivalent to that variable.
