Frequently expressed concerns:
"My child is an Honor Roll student/has all As in all of their other classes but not in yours".
World Languages are very different from all other courses that your child has. Languages are notoriously challenging to learn. You most likely will find that your child has to study more for language classes than they do for any other class.
Most of what we do in levels 1 & 2 are things that need to be memorized. In particular vocabulary. While there are different ways to explain grammatical concepts (and you can find a lot of helpful videos and websites just by searching the internet), vocabulary cannot be explained. I strongly suggest that your child make flashcards for each word on every list.
"My child is not a good speller in English".
Learning a language requires proper spelling. A missed accent mark or a missing letter can completely change the meaning of the word. Students who misspell words will have their answers marked accordingly.
"My child is shy and does not like to talk in class".
Use of Target Language (a.k.a. speaking) is a requirement by the World Language Department and approved by the District.
For my classes, it is not difficult to earn 2 points a day. Each day, students need to answer a couple of questions throughout the Block and bring their required materials to class.
Each day's points will be marked on my seating chart (your child can ask to look at the chart before they leave class). At the end of the week, I enter that week's UTL grade into Schoology/PowerSchool.
