Good News at Chaparral

Chaparral High School has amazing students, teachers and community members.  We would like to share their accomplishments.  Please send me your good news.  It will be shared as space allows. Lauri Echer @ lsimingtonecher@dcsdk12.org

Chaparral completed another successful year of Shadow Days! This year we hosted over 125 perspective students during our five shadow days. A big thank you to our teachers for being so accommodating and to all of our Shadow Hosts who volunteered their time and were such amazing ambassadors to our school.

Battle of the Books- The first annual DCSD High School Battle of the Books (BOB) competition took place at the Parker Library on February 4th, 2017. Organized by the district’s high school teacher-librarians (TLs), the competition included 19 Chaparral contestants:  Yemi Ajao, Raelyn Alirez, Erica Barillari, Chance Campbell, Kyra Cole, Lainey Crystal, Lauren Daniels, Annika Hankenson, Carmel Harrison, Megan Houston, Connor Hughes, Kendra June, Kaelynn Kenny, Ridaa Khan, Miranda Lewis, Brianna Morris, Megan Reiner, Kat Rubano, and Kati Williams.

What is the DCSD high school BOB? Briefly:

1.      Each high school solicited teams of three to four students; multiple teams were allowed. (CHS had five teams!)

2.   Team members submitted book suggestions; the District TLs selected ten titles from the numerous submissions in order to incorporate a variety of genres.

3.   Each team member committed to reading 2-3 (or more!) books from the official BOB list of books; their goal was to become “experts” on their books.

4.         As team members read, they generated questions to be considered for the competition; the District TLs selected MANY student questions, and they added a few of their own.

5.         The TL’s created brackets of competition, collected prizes, solicited judges, and ordered lots of food.

6.         Let the games begin! Teams competed head-to-head; judges asked a question, teams discussed possible answers and wrote their answers on whiteboards within a one-minute time limit; all correct answers garnered points for the teams; those teams with the highest scores continued into the final rounds.

7.         Awards were as follows:

a.          Grand Prize was a Kindle Fire for each team member

b.         A traveling trophy went to the winning team’s school

Other raffled prizes were donated by: Douglas County Libraries, Tattered Cover Book Store, 2nd and Charles, Barnes & Noble, Panera Bread, King Soopers, and Fika Coffee.

Our Chaparral students competed with grace, wisdom, humor, kindness, and excellence, and the team of Yemi Ajao, Carmel Harrison, Megan Houston, and Brianna Morris took second place! Other Chap students stuck around and prepared these four, quizzing them, clarifying details from the books, and making the experience a true team event.

We could not feel more pride than we feel for these 19 outstanding young men and women. The underclassmen involved are already talking about “next year.” Read on!

Nice Job Rylie Mundell! Chaparral freshman Rylie Mundell, a level 10 club gymnast at Colorado Gymnast Institute in Aurora, recently qualified to the prestigious Nastia Liukin Cup to be held March 3rd at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.  More information can be found in the press release.

We are so proud of the Chap Boys basketball players who went to Sierra Middle School classrooms a few times per week to work with individual students in reading, writing and math.  The Sierra kids have loved this!

The boys invited the middle-school students to be their guests at one of their final home games. Thank you to Stacey Giles and Mrs. Parker in coordinating this endeavor.
