Welcome to the Niles North Student Inquiry and Research page.

This course is intended for students who are interested in pursuing a higher-level, year long, in-depth study of a science topic of their choosing. Successful students in this course will be self-motivated and independent learners. This course will give students the opportunity to participate in the community of scientific research and scholarship. One requirement of the course is that students will present their research at the Illinois Junior Academy of Science Regional Science Fair where they will have the opportunity to qualify for the Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Science Fair and the INTEL ISEF Science Fair.

• I can write questions that can be answered through scientific investigation.

• I can design a scientific investigation to answer a testable question.

• I can keep a research journal that records all of the relevant information and experiences related to my project.

• I can review the literature that is pertinent to my project and summarize the relevant information into my final research paper.

• I can conduct a scientific investigation to answer a testable question.

• I can re-evaluate and alter my experimental procedure, as needed.

• I can write a comprehensive research paper.

• I can prepare and present an oral defense of my research.

• I can prepare and present a poster display that summarizes my research.

• I can actively engage in scientific peer review.
