Philip Baldwin is director of string studies, conductor of the Whitworth Orchestra, and associate professor of violin. Baldwin is a dedicated artist-teacher whose students have won competitions and have received scholarships to prestigious graduate schools and summer programs. He has also trained many successful teachers who are now influencing the next generation of string playing. He is the concertmaster and assistant conductor of the Coeur d’Alene Symphony and a former tenured member of the Spokane Symphony. He has been the invited conductor of the WMEA Junior All-State Orchestra, and the past-president of the Washington Chapter of the American String Teachers Association. He is also a frequent guest conductor, lecturer and recitalist.

Performing engagements include the Coeur d'Alene Symphony, concertmaster, violin soloist, and assistant conductor (2007-present); Spokane Symphony Orchestra (2001-2007); Tacoma Symphony (2000-01); Southwest Symphony, concertmaster (1999-2000) and associate concertmaster (1998-99).

Master-class clinician, University of Puget Sound Community Music School ('08, '09); adjudicator and clinician for University of Illinois String and Orchestra Clinic (2009); adjudicator for WSMTA regional auditions (2009); adjudicator and clinician for CBMEA Large Group Orchestra Festival (2009); conductor of the Spokane Junior Symphonic Orchestra and conductor of the WMEA Junior All-State Orchestra.

Presentations include: "Bowing Workshop," at the State Conference of the Washington Music Educators Association, Bellevue (2011) and Yakima (2010); "Teaching Musicality to Orchestra Students," at the state WMEA conference, Bellevue (2011); "A String Player's Guide to Wind and Brass Articulation," at the National Conference of the American String Teacher's Association, Kansas City (2011); "Excellence in the Private Studio," at the National ASTA Conference, Santa Clara, Calif. (2010); "Orchestral Essentials: Techniques Every Violinist Must Know" at the national conference of ASTA (2007); "Meeting NASM Standards in the Applied Studio" at the national conference of ASTA (2008); "The Sounds of Silence: The Lonely Voice in Music and Literature" at the International Short Story Conference in Cork, Ireland (2008); "Practical Practicing: 20 Tips for Avoiding Mindless Repetition" and moderated a panel discussion, "Establishing a String Certificate Program in Your State," at the ASTA National Convention (2005). Presented "Teaching Musicality to Orchestra Students" at the TMEA convention (2005).

Received the Collegiate String Teacher of the Year Award, presented by the American String Teacher's Association, Washington Chapter (2010).

Past president of the Washington State Chapter of the American String Teachers Association with National School Orchestra Association (2004-06; president-elect 2001-03).
