Symphonic Orchestra Auditions

Central Valley High School • 2026–27 School Year

Auditions are now open for current and incoming CVHS students who would like to be considered for Symphonic Orchestra for the 2026–27 school year.

Current Symphonic Orchestra students will automatically remain in Symphonic Orchestra next year. For these students, this audition will be used for chair placement only.

Current Concert Orchestra students will be evaluated for placement into either Symphonic Orchestra or Concert Orchestra for the 2026–27 school year.

To be placed into Symphonic Orchestra, students must earn a minimum score of 30 out of 40 points based on the attached Orchestra Audition Rubric.

Audition Materials

Students should locate their instrument’s audition music and download the required PDF materials.
Practice resources, including YouTube accompaniment and reference videos, are also provided to support preparation.

Before recording, students should carefully review the audition rubric to understand how they will be assessed in each category.

Submission Requirements

Students must submit their audition by video recording.

Each recording must clearly show:

• the entire instrument
  
  

• the student’s upper body
  
  

• both the left hand and bow hand
  
  

Because students are being assessed on both instrument position and bow technique, recordings that do not clearly show these elements may receive a failing score in that rubric category.

Required Video Submissions

Students must submit 5 separate video recordings.
Please do not combine everything into one video.

Each file should be labeled by section:

• C Major 3–8va Scale

• G Minor Melodic 2-Octave Scale

• E Minor 2-Octave Arpeggio

• A-flat Major Scale Etude

• B Minor Etude

Submitting each scale and etude separately helps ensure accurate and efficient assessment.

How to Submit

Current CVHS students should submit their recordings through their current Google Classroom assignment.

Please follow all instructions in Google Classroom carefully when uploading files.

Deadline

All audition recordings are due by April 20, 2026.

After auditions are reviewed, students will be assessed and notified of their placement.

Recommended Practice Approach

Students are strongly encouraged to work on the audition material weekly and submit recordings over time rather than waiting until the deadline.

This gives each student the best opportunity to prepare thoroughly and submit their strongest performance.

In-Person Audition Option

Students who prefer not to submit their audition electronically may request an in-person audition instead.

Eligibility

Auditions are open to all current and incoming CVHS students.
At this time, auditions are not open to incoming freshmen.
