Welcome to Te Huinga Wai | Senior Division 2026
Year 13 students will typically have a five subject loading with the sixth line being a 13STY or a Study Period. We are reasonably flexible about how students spend their time, however as independent learners it is strongly advised that it used used for regular revision and catch-up of material being learned and working on internal assessment as appropriate. Cumulatively, this time is a valuable resource for students if is is used consistently over the course of the year.
If a Study Period falls during a Period 1 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday or Period 2 on a Wednesday, the expectation is that you are in the Library, Pukehinau Break-out spaces, or the Senior Common Room where a Dean or Deputy Principal will come around to take the roll. Attendance during this time contributes to your overall attendance for the year so you need to be there. (see Graduation) .
If students wish to study elsewhere onsite during these periods, they should first sign in using the exercise book on the front desk of the library with their name and where they intend to be. Students who sign in here will be marked PRESENT.
The reason we mark a roll at this time is that we are keen to make sure our students are out of bed and being productive for the day. It also means we can account for you in the event of an emergency.
For all study periods which fall after these times, students are encouraged to use the library and other spaces around the school to work, but there is no expectation that they must be there. The roll is simply marked on the basis of periods present either side of the study period.
If a student has a class Period 3 and is marked Present by the teacher, and then has Study Period 4, the Absence Officer will mark the student as Present for Period 4.
During these later periods however, students may leave the school grounds to go home, run errands, have lunch etc. on the understanding that they behave respectfully out in the community, use motor vehicles sensibly and lawfully, and that they return to school for any subsequent lessons they may have.
Part of being a successful independent learner is having the maturity and motivation to use this time to your advantage.
