Session One of this course will present a lesson model, teaching two or more of BuildaBridge’s four goal areas as an illustration of arts-integrated education. Sessions two and three focus on giving participants the basic mechanics of creating arts-integrated and art-as-metaphor curricula and lesson plans that can be used to teach humanities, science and other academic subjects. These sessions will also model the elements of the trauma-informed BuildaBridge Classroom.

• The arts accommodate a variety of learning styles and improve learning
• Unique strengths of each art form
• Arts-based assessment
• Metaphor-the key “teaching element” in the art-making process
• The role of “ritual”
• Developing rubrics
• Elements of curriculum writing and lesson planning
• Characteristics of effective teachers Standards for the Arts

BuildaBridge teachers Magi Ross and Jamaine Smith will also lead a typical BuildaBridge class so students can get a real feel of the classroom model and actively participate. This will help set the stage for the Methods Labs that participants take part in during the Institute.
