The new iMac lab at the Nicollet campus is ready and open for business! It was completed in record time (two days ahead of schedule!), with only a few things to add over the next few weeks (the grant is also going to provide a couple of new, more energy-efficient printers for us and some updated software). As soon as I can work with the teachers to set up some training or arrange my schedule to work with their classes myself, the students will be using them, maybe as early as tomorrow!
Here's just a small list of what students will be able to do:
word process documents using Pages, NeoOffice or Google Docs
create spreadsheets using Numbers, NeoOffice or Google Docs
create presentations using Keynote, NeoOffice or Google Docs
perform internet research using Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Safari
explore using Google Earth
compose and edit original music with GarageBand
create movies with iMovie, iPhoto and iTunes
author DVDs with iDVD
write programs with Scratch
create original artwork with TuxPaint
improve their typing/keyboarding skills with Type to Learn
organize thoughts and ideas with Inspiration
All of this software is either OpenSource (free for anyone's use) or provided by the Legacy grant as part of the computer lab purchase.
