MICROBIOLOGY
The branches of microbiology can be classified into pure and applied sciences.Microbiology can be also classified based on taxonomy, in the cases of bacteriology, mycology, protozoology, and phycology. Specifically we will be looking into bacteriology which is the study of Prokaryotic cells or bacteria. We will also be investigating protozology which is the study of single cellular Eukaryotic cells called Protist. We will look into three major types of Protists: Protozoa, Algae, and Slime Molds. We will also take a tour of common Protists in our area in local pond water.
MYCOLOGY
Mycology is the study of Fungi. In this short unit we will learn about the four different phylums in the Fungi Kingdom. We will investigate the common types of Fungi in Iowa and learn their Genus and Speices names. We will also understand the role and importance of Fungi in the Ecosystem. Finally, we will dissect a common Club Mushroom.
