This essay first appeared as a chapter in Alexie's first collection of interconnected stories, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, originally published in 1993. Alexie himself is a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian, and grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Wellpinit, Washington.
“Indian Education” follows a character named Victor from first grade through high school and is written from Victor's perspective. While it has features of a short story, its arrangement reads more like a personal essay with each grade divided and containing its own mini-thesis to form a larger idea and impression of what school was like for Victor and how his readers might be educated about the Native American experience.
