Family Math Project Due May 14, 2018

Students are to create a math game to share with classmates.

Math games should:

    • be for 2-4 players

    • take no more than 15-20 minutes to play

    • have an overall theme (nature, car racing, dog show, under the sea, etc.)

    • have a title related to the concept/theme

The math game should consist of:

    • a student created game board

    • game pieces

    • neatly printed (or typed) instructions for play.

    • a decorated storage container (shoe box, cereal box, pizza box, etc.) that reflects the theme of the game inside.

The game MUST cover one of the concepts listed below.

money skills time skills fractions

story problems geometry multiplication

Please help your child to select a concept (from the list above) appropriate for him/her. The game should be an enrichment activity to stretch your child’s academic abilities. A game that is too easy or too hard will not serve this purpose. If your child is having difficulty coming up with a game idea, suggest a “piggy back” (a game played similar to another favorite game such as Monopoly®, Chutes & Ladders®, Candyland®, Ants in the Pants®, or even our Frog Games® from class) game. I encourage you to practice the game at home with your child several times before they bring it to school to present it to the class.

Grading Criteria:

    • 10 pts. Creativity—the game looks fun to play!

    • 5 pts. Title—the game title is exhibited on the storage container.

    • 10pts. Materials—the game includes all necessary materials to play.

    • 15 pts. Neatness—spaces are large enough to hold game pieces, directions are neat, game board is neatly colored/decorated, game box is neatly decorated/colored, etc.

    • 15 pts. Demonstration/Presentation—the student can explain and demonstrate how to play the game accurately.

    • 15 pts. Instructions—the instructions are clear, short, and easily understood by a second grader.

    • 15 pts. Ability Level—the level is appropriate (not too easy-- but not too hard) for your second grader

    • 10 pts. Theme—The game has an overall theme (car racing, penguins, cooking, beach, etc.)

5 pts. On time- the project was submitted on or before May 14, 2018
