Chapter 12 Home Support
Shape Scavenger Hunt
Materials:
paper
pencil
Process:
Have student copy write this list on paper: square, triangle, rectangle, circle.
Have student go on a shape hunt in the house or neighborhood (with supervision). He/She should search for the shapes on their list.
When he/she finds a shape, have him/her write where they found it, and draw a picture of it.
Student can refer back to their lists throughout the chapter if needed.
Parroting Shape Patterns
Materials:
markers
paper
Process:
Draw a shape pattern on paper.
Have student identify each shape in the pattern.
Then have students copy the pattern by drawing it on their own paper.
Fractional Parts of Shapes
Materials:
construction paper
scissors
Process:
Cut out a variety of shapes, in different colors, from construction paper.
Draw lines to separate the shapes into halves, thirds, or fourths.
Have student write the number of parts for each of the shapes.
Have student cut apart the shapes and mix up the pieces.
Ask student to match equal parts to put the shapes back together again.
Label each fractional part
Triangle Fun
Materials:
6 pattern block triangles (or same size paper triangles) for each student
Process:
Have student use the 6 triangles to make as many different shapes as they can. (Examples below)
Tell student that the sides of the triangles that touch must match completely.
Student does not have to use all 6 triangles to make the new shape.
Have student trace their shapes on paper and label them. (sqare, rectangle, hexagon)
Have student label each fractional part (1/2 for each square partition, 1/4 for each rectangle partition, and 1/6 for each hexagon partition)
