Chapter 10 Home Support
Miming Time:
Materials:
clock with second hand
index cards (labeled with different activities that take varying amounts of time)
Process:
Ask student to think about activities he/she has done that takes about 1 second, 1 minute, or 1 hour.
Have student write each activity on an index card. Adult helpers complete a set of index cards as well.
Place the index cards facedown.
The student picks a card and pantomimes the activity.
Others guess the activity and tell whether it takes 1 second, 1 minute, or 1 hour.
Repeat the activity until everyone has a turn.
Time Sort:
Materials:
sticky notes
Process:
Draw three columns on a large piece of paper. The headings should read One Second, One Minute, and One Hour.
On sticky notes, have student describe something they can do in about each amount of time.
Sample answer: bounce a ball (second), walk to lunch room (minute), homework (hour)
Have student place their sticky notes in the correct column on the board.
Clock Concentration:
Make flash cards that show time in the o’clock format and another set of cards that show clocks telling time to the hour.
Place all cards facedown.
Have student find and match the times.
Be a Clock:
Have student model the time by using one arm as the hour hand and the other arm as a minute hand.
Give the student times to model.
Have the student give you a time to model and the student will confirm or deny your positioning of hands.
Make a Time Model:
Use 60 connecting cubes (15 each of four colors) (if cubes are unavailable students may use centimeter sized squares of paper) to represent the tick marks on a clock.
Students connect all of one color before going on to the next color.
Have students count the cubes as they join them into one long train.
Have students divide the train into four equal parts and count the cubes in each part.
Use a Model
Make a giant clock on your driveway with chalk.
Have student step on each number on the clock as they count by fives.
