Background & Needs

Background of Lake Geneva-Genoa City Union High School (Badger High School)

Lake Geneva-Genoa City Union High School (Badger High School) Badger opened its doors in 1958 after a consolidation that saw Genoa City High School and Lake Geneva High School merge. We officially became the Lake Geneva-Genoa City Union High School, - better known as Badger High School..Badger serves the City of Lake Geneva, Village of Genoa City, and towns of Bloomfield, Geneva, LaFayette, Linn, Lyons, and Spring Prairie. The 2012 Graduating Class was the 54th in Badger’s school history. Throughout the decades, Badger has graduated many fine students who have gone onto very productive lives and careers, not only in our community but also across the United States and the world. We are proud of all of our students, both past and present. Currently, our grades 9-12 enrollment is projected to be 1450 students-the largest in school history! Our staff is both very professional and caring. We have over 100 staff that is not only extremely qualified, but they are also constantly working to improve themselves through ongoing coursework, in-servicing, and collaboration. We are blessed to be in a district that allows time for our teachers to work on best practices and improve our teaching and instruction for our students. Through this and many other initiatives, our student success rate on our state test has increased dramatically over the past three years. We are above the state average in all state test areas with increases in every area each year. Our ACT score exceeded our school goal. The number of students taking Advanced Placement courses in the last three years has increased to 450. With this, our failure rates have decreased by almost 35%.  These facts are a true compliment to our great staff, students, and community. Outside of academics, our students are succeeding in many other areas. We won conference in four sports last year, had a great number of students go to nationals in DECA, and our Culinary Arts program won second at state. The list goes on; we are proud of Badger. Innovation is a strong characteristic of our staff. As just one indication of this, Badger utilizes a Modified Block Schedule. In January 1999, an $18 million addition to Badger was completed. Much needed teaching space was added including a library/learning center, six science labs, culinary arts room, sports center, guidance offices, plus the remodeling of classrooms and administration areas. In April 2003, a $4.6 million referendum was passed to improve our performing arts and family consumer education areas. New band, choir, and orchestra classrooms, plus a renovated auditorium are the main features. In 2006, our community passed another referendum to build on 22 more classrooms on the southeast corner of the building to deal with our increased enrollment. A recent addition onto the south side of the building included additional classroom space for mathematics and world languages, new art classrooms, and a fitness center on the second floor. The library/media center now houses a 1,000 sq. ft. STEM lab.  These newest areas will meet the needs of our students and the progressive curriculum we have implemented at Badger to give our students an edge over others. Plans were recently approved to make major improvements to the auditorium and main competition gymnasium. We are extremely grateful for all the support provided to our students and staff from the communities Badger High School serves.

Background of Lake Geneva Middle School

Background of Lake Geneva Middle School

On behalf of the over 700 students and 70 professional or paraprofessional staff members who make this a wonderful place to learn and work, we welcome you to Lake Geneva Middle School.  We hope you enjoy your visit!

In August 1999, the Lake Geneva Middle School opened its doors to serve the learning and developmental needs of sixth, seventh and eighth graders in the Lake Geneva Joint #1 Elementary School District.  It is always a very exciting and enjoyable process to provide excellent learning experiences in this state-of-the-art facility.  The almost 150,000 square foot structure is located on 13 acres adjacent to the Badger High School complex.  Both schools share many of the outdoor facilities on the 80-acre site, which is located on the southeast side of the city of Lake Geneva.  Students from the city of Lake Geneva as well as the townships of Bloomfield, Geneva, Linn, Lyons and Spring Prairie comprise our “wolf pack”.

The design of the Lake Geneva Middle School is built upon our district’s commitment to the “middle school concept”.  Students at each grade level are taught in “houses” of approximately 125 students.

Each of these houses is assigned five teachers who guide the learning experiences of their shared students in the areas of English, literature, math, science, and social studies.  The students spend two “segments” of their day, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, in their house receiving instruction in these five classes.  Teachers in the house have common planning time every day to facilitate the learning experiences available for each of their students.

Another “segment” of the day is dedicated to the performing ensembles in our music program.  If a student does not participate in band, choir or orchestra, a study hall is added to the schedule.  This meets in their “house” area.

The fourth “segment” of the day is devoted to students’ exploration of various areas of study in our Unified Arts program.  This exploratory experience provides students exposure to foreign language, physical education, general music, our exploratory cycle made up of art, computers, family and consumer science, health, life study skills, and the technology center.  The classes meet every other day.  On one day, students receive a class period of foreign language and physical education.  On the other day, they attend the exploratory rotation for both periods, creating 90-minutes of time for these activity-based classes.  The general music experience meets on alternating days with study hall.

Support for these learning experiences comes from many areas.  The Lake Geneva Middle School provides guidance services for the student body through the expertise of two certified counselors.  The Media Center is located at the “hub” of the building and provides excellent resources for students and staff members.  A full-time media specialist coordinates these services.  In addition, we have excellent paraprofessional staff members who provide effective clerical, custodial and food service support for the smooth operation of our school.  Finally, we are very fortunate to have the strong support of the LGMS Parent Teacher Organization.  This organization provides many of the extras that make this a truly special place to learn and grow.

Students extend their learning outside the classroom through many co-curricular activities provided by the school.  Students can participate in Destination Imagination, Forensics, French Club, Jazz Ensemble, Newspaper Club, Stock Market Club,Games Club, Science Fair, Student Council and Yearbook Club as well as basketball, cross country, flag football, gymnastics, soccer, track, volleyball, dance and wrestling.

Background of Central-Denison Elementary School

Central-Denison Elementary School is located in the heart of Lake Geneva, and is part of the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District. At the present time, Central-Denison Elementary School offers seven sections of kindergarten, six sections of first grade, six sections of second grade, six sections of third grade, five sections of fourth grade and four sections of fifth grade. Grades kindergarten through three participate in the SAGE program which limits the classroom enrollment to eighteen students per one teacher. Central-Denison staff and community are very proud of our beautiful facility. The Central building was built in 1904. The Denison building was constructed in 1928. The two buildings were joined with a third construction project in 1962. The older facilities have been fully updated and have high ceilings and large classroom spaces. Our new LMC (Library media Center), which was added to the building in 2005, features space for four concurrent classes as well as a good sized book collection and a computer lab. We also have a spacious gymnasium, art room, and music area. In addition to the computers in our LMC, we have two other labs; one is used for the third through fifth grade classes, and the other is for the four-year-old through second grade classes. Each classroom is equipped with Smart Board technology. We have recently begun using iPads; we have a classroom set for teachers to use. We also have iPads for the 4K, 5K, and first grade teaching teams, the ESL staff, and the special ed staff. We plan to continue equipping others with iPads as we explore the best way to use them to enhance student achievement. Our LMC area is wireless which has helped with our iPad efforts. Central-Denison has many special programs for students and families throughout the school year. They include our family math and science night, family reading nights, sports activities, and musical programs. We also have Lighted Schoolhouse activities and provide complete services for special education students as well as a district Gifted and Talented program. Central-Denison has an active Parent Teacher Organization which sponsors events for students and families such as the Fall Family Festival, the Holiday Shoppe, and roller skating. Many parents and community members volunteer at Central-Denison helping students to learn math facts, improve their reading, or appreciate classic art through the Picture Person Program. Our goal is to form a partnership with the home, school and community to provide the best education possible for students at Central-Denison Elementary. We are the Dolphins, "Leaping to Excellence."

Background of Eastview Elementary School

From the brightly decorated, smile-filled hallways to the spacious lush lawns that our students play on, we are a school filled with great pride. A school is so much more than a building and playground, however. A school is people!  Eastview is one of three PRE-K-5 facilities in the Joint #1 Elementary School district. The original building was constructed in 1951. An addition was constructed on the south end of the building in 1965. Today, we have every classroom in use with little room to spare. Our library and computer lab have recently been updated. Grades kindergarten through three participate in the SAGE program.

Eastview School is all about children. Our dedicated team of professional educators is committed to working together, along with families and community members, to offer each and every child at Eastview the very best opportunities for academic and personal growth.

The key words here are “working together.” The three major contexts in which children learn and grow are the family, school and community. To ensure that our children achieve the highest level of success, these influences must be drawn together to overlap.

Together, we will help every Eastview Eagle soar to new heights.

Background of Star Center Elementary School

Star Center Elementary School is located in the community of Pell Lake and is part of the Lake Geneva Joint #1 School District.  The original Star Center was built in 1840 on County Road H near Clover Road.  In 1960, a new school was built on Lake Geneva Highway where Star Center stands today.  In 1972, an additional wing was added to include six classrooms, a library, and a gym.  Twelve additional classrooms and a new gymnasium were constructed in 2001 to accommodate increased enrollment.  A second referendum was passed in 2006 which further added twenty classrooms, a renovated library, and a full service kitchen.  At the present time, 427 students are currently enrolled at Star Center Elementary.

Star Center offers instruction in grades 4K-5 and also provides a home for Head Start.  With a variety of support programs available such as Special Education and English as a Second Language, Star Center meets the social, emotional, and academic needs of students.  Children may also participate in Kid College after school activities, Safety Patrol, Student Council, READS, and various gifted and talented programs.

Star Center is fortunate to have a very active PTO which contributes significantly to our school environment.  Events such as the Fall Fest, Holiday Shop, Box Top Tally Rallies, Ski Club, and Craft Day greatly motivate students and staff.  With parent and staff support, students at Star Center participate in unique and meaningful learning experiences each day.
