Badger High School LMC Collection Analysis

Lake Geneva Middle School LMC Collection:

As of February 27, 2012, Lake Geneva Middle School Library Media Center has 12943 items, including books, videos, and laptops. The collection is split between hardcover and paperback books to allow for a variety of titles. There is also a section of Book Bonanza titles which rotate every year. The entire collection and its patron circulation information is stored on a server using Follett Destiny software. The new shelves along the back wall that were added during the summer of 2007 are filling quickly and will now be maintained via the weeding process.

Three Year Plan for the LMC Book Collection of LGMS

Lake Geneva Middle School LMC serves 6th-8th grades.

• Continue to examine the aged titles in the nonfiction section and replace them as appropriate.

• Monitor collection by using Follett’s Titlewave Analysis.

• Expand the fiction section to allow for more diversity of titles.

• Use the inventory process to assess the collection and weed as appropriate.

LGMS LMC Technology:

The LMC currently has 34 computers for student use and 2 computers with barcode scanners for patron records and check out. The LMC is open to all students and teachers from 7:00 AM – 3:20 PM on Monday through Friday. Literature classes come in twice a month to check out books for projects and pleasure reading books. This time is held jointly with the classroom teachers. Math, Reading, Social Studies and Science teachers also bring in their students to use the computers in the LMC and in rm. 209 for Microsoft Office and Internet research, as well as Internet based programs such as Wikis, Glogster, Edmodo, Prezi and more. The research is primarily done using pre-selected websites compiled by the Library Media Specialist with teacher input, World Book Online, Grolier Online, Badgerlink, NetTrekker, and other online databases.

Sixth grade projects include a biography project focusing on famous women in history, a choice-based I-Search project, and a Natural or Un-Natural Disaster speech. All of these projects have typically been done second semester. The LMC reference books, non-fiction books and computers are used heavily at this time.

Seventh grade projects include a country simulation research project using a variety of sources – both print and electronic - to create their own perfect country, a self-instructed wiki-based novel unit, and several writing projects throughout the year. These projects focus on the research process: from gathering the information to note-taking and then assembling the information in a creative and interesting way.

Eighth grade projects include a controversial issue report, a Holocaust research project, and book clubs in both the Omega and Delta houses of eighth grade. These clubs involve reading books together and composing responses on the computers in the LMC and the computer lab in rm. 209.

The French classes also make use of the LMC for research. Projects include a French speaking countries report and research on famous French speaking people for 6th and 8th grade students.

Spanish language classes use an online quiz program that accompanies the Spanish text book in both the LMC and the room 209 lab.

LGMS LMC Staff:

The LGMS LMC staff is comprised of one full-time Certified Library Media Specialist, one full-time Library Aide, and one full-time District Technician.

LGMS LMC Facilities:

The LMGS LMC was built along with the new building in 1999. The room itself contains many network and electricity ports for computers in a variety of areas.

LGMS LMC Website:

The LMGS LMC has a page on the LGMS website which provides the students with information specific links that have been researched and chosen based on direct ties to curriculum. They are updated each year and substitute links are chosen when URLs become dead links. The grade level and content specific links fall under the following categories: Citing Resources; Search Engines, 6th Grade, 7th Grade, 8th Grade, Book Bonanza Links, Teacher Resources, Reference Links and Internet Policy. The collection of links is displayed for students and teachers during large group instruction at the beginning of the school year in conjunction with grade level English and literature classes. The website can be reached at this link.

Students are also instructed on the use of the online patron access which is available on all the LMC computers. Procedures for laptop computer check-out as well as book return policies are covered at this time.

LGMS LMC Equipment:

LGMS LMC Laptop Computer Checkout

On December 11th, 2003, the LGMS LMC began offering Toshiba Laptop computers for students to check out. The laptops have cases and are to be returned immediately upon arrival the following morning. The laptops provide Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and Publisher, and Inspiration for outlining. The Internet capabilities have been disabled. Check out is on a first come first serve basis. No reservations are taken.
